Just wondering how many other's on the board built their own computers and what kind of rigs you're currently running. I'll start.

Built mine... AMD 3200+, 1gb Dual Path DDR ram, AMI Raid Controller w/128mb cache, 2 73gb U320 drives in a Raid 1 config, GeForce 4 Graphics card and a SB Live sound card...
Does the trick for me... :D

Ours is from a small company called "Ibuypower" it's a great company, good stuff for cheap...what would have cost us 3500 or more from dell was 1500 from here. It's a nice company.

I couldn't begin to go through everything, but it's almost a year old...neon lights and left side is see through, 80gig hard drive CD burner and DVD...Zip and a 1.6ghz pentium 4, AOpen motherboard, 64mb graphics card, 1gig of RAM, 5.1 surround from creative, but the neon light is the best

I buy a new desktop every 2 years and a new notebook on the off year. I don't care about the hardware enough any more to hassle with building it. "Hello Dell. Send me another one."

Strictly Mac. Dual processor G4 tower and a G4 laptop fully loaded. I doubt I will get a tower again as good as laptops are these days.

Now you're wandering into my territory. I used to build 'em for a living. Now I make my living using them for web development. As each machine is retired from being my primary workstation, it gets moved to the server closet (3 boxes running various versions of W2K Server in there now). The PC dujour is as follows:
ASUS P4C800-E motherboard
Intel P4 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB
2 GB of TwinX3700 DDR RAM
EVGA FX5900 Ultra 256MB vid card
4 X WD Raptor 10K RPM SATA HDD in 2 RAID 0 arrays
2 X DVD+RW PLEXTOR PX-504A
SoundBlaster Audigy2
all tucked in a black Enermax case with a 550W Antec power supply.
Klipsch 5.1 THX speakers
ViewSonic VP211b 21.3in Pivot LCD display with DVI (black)
Logitech Cordless MX Duo Elite Keyboard and MX700 Optical Mouse (black)
wired network in the home office with wireless access point for the rest of the house to support the obligatory laptop, PDA, and web-enabled cel phone.
This setup is almost as fast as my Marauder.

I was a designer / builder in the early '80's. The last machine I built was a 486/50 with 4mb. ram and a scsi 1mb h.d.!!:baaa:
You can tell it's been awhile. Made my start with AT's then XT'S and was a beta tester for the first runs of OS2 and windows.
Now I buy. This plug and play crap has me all confused. :P
If it doesn't need low-level formatted, bios configured and all ports irq's and addresses set... I'm lost.

You name it, I've got it, built it or am building it.
4 way Xeons, 3GhZ Pentium 4's, newer 4 way AMD's, even some 16 way Power PC AS/400's.
Curztaker: I too had OS/2 Warp version 3.99 :) Still have installation discs for "Microsoft OS/2 1.6", Warp 3 and Warp 4!!!
My biggest project so far has been removing all Microsoft Software from our enterprise. The back end is almost done, but for 1 domain controller.

Do what I did -
Get a 5th or 6th grader to show you how everything works.
Heck, they showed me the best sites to, um, "borrow" music online. ;-)

Been building my own since, oh, '86 or '87 I think. Back when the PC compatibles were still a relatively new thing. That's PCs of course, I buy my Macs.
Current rigs:
Dual 1.42 GHz G4 PowerMac tower, 2 GB DDR RAM, 240 GB hard drive, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) driving a glorious 23" HD Cinema Display (http://www.apple.com/displays/acd23/) .
and the one I built...
Pentium 4 3 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1 GB DDR RAM (CL2 latency), 160 GB S-ATA RAID, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB).
I do everything serious on the first one, and play games on the second one. :)

The latest build...
AMD Opteron 146
OnChip Memory Controller
1GB Registered ECC PC3200 DDR (Measure Memory bandwidth is 5.8 GB/s )
(The board will support 4GB... but my wallet/needs do not)
Raid 0 Serial ATA w/ Dual 80 GB (150 MB/s transfer)
CD-RW (No DVD, never found a need to wastch movies on the computer yet, that what the laptop is good for on the plane)
MSI Automatic Overclock MoBo
1GB Ethernet Network
6 USB 2.0 ports
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB)
ViewSonic 19" FP w/ Integrated USB 2.0 Hub
Antec Case
Logitech Mouse and Keyboard
Sprint Broadband RF link to the Sears Tower.
and a partridge in a pear tree...
Not one game on the machine...
Built from the components up...
Just downloaded the 64bit Windows XP... It is suppose to be cold here this weekend... Maybe will install a couple new hard drives and try to install.
