Looks like it failed at the spreader. I'd suspect worn or frayed cables. Could also be an undersized cable. Minimum 7/8" steel cable/wire rope would lift 36.2 tons with virtually no margin of safety. 1.5" cable would have provided an adequate design safety margin. Straight failure seems likely. If so, I hope the shipping and loading company has insurance. Cost of the locomotive is between $4-6 Million. Weight of the locomotive was between 134-139 tons.
