View Full Version : How big's your garage?

Im in the development stages for a new garage behind my existing shop ( for my havc equipment ) and was wondering for you guys that store your MM indoors how big is your garage? I was thinking at first of a 18x28 or 18x36 but now im thinking I want to keep my MM indoors ( when I get it ) along with the lightning. Im currently keeping the L in my hvac shop and thats the main reason for the new garage, but if im getting the MM I wont want it out in the weather either. I checked on a 22x36 with two 10x8 garage doors this afternoon and its going to run about 2k more than the smaller ones and thats just the structure NO concrete additional figured in that 2k. So im guessing another 500 to 1000 for the concrete. What size you guys have? How much room to spare with the cars in there?

My garage is 19.6 deep and I have to tap the sheetrock with the front bumper of my quadcab to be able to close the doors behind it. I would love to have a garage at least 25 feet deep so I could have a workbench but it aint gonna happen now.
32'W x 40'D and it's to damn small... Currently the Marauder, '69 Fairlane Cobra and a '88 T-Bird are hangin' out in there, if I didn't have so much other stuff I could get at least two more in there...

21x21 easily fits the Marauder, and the minivan. Plus more 😉
Plus I built an attached shed/addition to the back side with a 36" door between the two. I needed to get my tools out of the garage so I could park.. That one is 10' deep x 20' wide.

Ours is 26 X 36... a friend told me to go the extra width over the typical 24' it makes a big difference. If I could have (septic is in the way) I would have gone longer. Two full size cars will not fit nose to tail or trucks and cars. We have 5 in there right now.

You guys have unbelievable garages. I can only wish.
If I put a lift in my garage, if I were to raise the car, the car would come up into the master bedroom.
My town would never let me build a big garage (it would never meet property line clearances), and I'm already approaching $9,000 per year in local property taxes. Add in a big garage and watch the taxes go nuts.
And, in my area, my town's taxes are relatively low due to the amount of large shopping malls, stores, etc in the town. Neighboring town's tax rates are higher.
(In a neighboring town, they re-appraised my friend's house, and said his 16 X 16 outdoor patio is now considered "living space".)

I'm about to build a 24 by 36 by 12 pole barn style garage.
I'd make it bigger but am constricted by a Pecan tree and a drain field.

When I had a garage, it was the 24 by 36 by 12 pole barn style garage. It worked well, but I agree, that any extra width 26, 28 or 30, would be well worth it.

The problem with adding just a couple feet additional is it will cost almost as much as adding 4ft... With 2ft you'll be cutting down 4'x8' to gain the extra, just easier to slap the complete sheet in place...

I don't have a pic of the one at my house. It's more of an old workshop that came with the property, I saw the potential in it and was able to save it rather than tear it down. I can fit 16 vehicles in it during the winter.

Yes, and since I am dealing with metal trusses, the next increment up would be 36 feet wide, not an option for the space I have.
The pole barn will cost about $4500, which I think is a pretty good deal.

I have a two car attached garage, a two and a half car detached garage across from the attached garage. I just built a 30X60X16 steel garage behind the house with a two post lift. I can easily fit five cars and two motorcycles in it. I have been using the lift quite a bit and am glad I have it. I did the camber adjustment modification using it.

I have a three car garage with a bench area in the back of the 1st bay. I have a second story for storage of all the things you accumulate while doing resto-modifications.
Whomever coined the phrase "Size Matters" definately knew what they were saying in regards to garage space. I feel pretty blessed to have what I do , but lifes legalities always can throw you a curve. My setback on garage width was hampered by zoning regulations. My house had a den added to it before the garage was planned and built. Rules of seperation of two independent stuctures came into play. I would have liked to have had 5 feet of clearance with any cars doors fully open , instead I had to settle for 3 feet on either side with the doors wide open. Depth was also a semi-comprimised. because of the same zoning restrictions.
My biggest regret if you want to call it that? was ceiling height. My floor level height is only 9'6" , so this precludes any notion of putting a lift in the garage.
One Blessing did take place. I have nothing but automotive stuff stored in the garage, thanks in part to having a concrete pad away from the garage and the house already in place , where at one time a Tin Utlitity building once sat. I took advantage of that pad and built a utility building from scratch that was 12'x16' with a 9 Foot ceiling. This building is wired so if I need to tinker with the lawn tractor , weedeater or what ever , I don't have to carry it to the garage to work on it. All my lawn and garden stuff has it's place there.
My favorite thing about the garage is it's finished walls and ceilings ..and hand made cabinets on the walls above car door opeing height. Everything not in use has a place to be , Clutter Free is the way to go.
I have ample lighting in the garage...cannot stress this strongly enough. My first car project was a 1988 Crown Vic Police Package a number of years back. The garage was un-finished at that time in regards to interior walls and overly adequate lighting. Lack of proper lighting and some bounce back effect of another finished surface was equivalent to working in the bottom of a well with a flash light in hindsight. I cooled my heels on doing any other car projects until the infrastructure , minus a lift was rectified.
I know that we live in a world based on immediate gratification , but some of these things have taken years to do. I was not going into debt for this , it's all been pay as you go , do it yourself to avoid paying a contractor and enlist the help of a knowledgable electrician so the whole shabang passes building code inspections and doesn't end up a pile of ashes over being cheap or worse , Stupid.
Lastly...Insure your investment. Make damn sure your home owners covers the additions you make to your property. Insure your tools and automobilia that you have too. The annual costs are nothing compared to what some unforeseen event or tragic weather issue can cost you. Anything worth owning and cheerishing is worth insuring.

I did that more than a few years ago. I added a 28x36 detached garage by myself! 3 little kids and a more than full time job! It took a little over a year. It was a real bummer in the winter. But it was really awesome when done and it was great to (literally) do the whole thing by myself! The only thing I contracted out was the roof shingles, garage door and pouring and finishing the slab. All the design, tree clearing, foundation, block work, driveway, walls, trusses, roof plywood, electric & siding was done by me.
Now, I have a mere 24x26 garage attached to the house here in Florida. However, I do have a 24,000lb boat lift behind the house which is kinda like a garage (for my boat). :P
Good luck! Sounds like a fun project and you will be happy when done! Then you will have extra room for those father/son (or daughter) car projects!

That's a nice selection! But, wait until you see the insurance ratings for teenage boys! We have 2 teens and a college student now on the insurance. Cheaper the better... Can you say choking off the Eaton Swap!:(

My garage is way too small. I can barely fit the Edge, the Mustang, and my mini-bike. I'm exaggerating a little but not much. My Merc won't even fit in it lengthwise lmao and the Exploder stays outside.
We have a couple acres of land so plenty of land to build more garages, we have at least 3 more bays planned, I'm trying to double up and try and do 6 bays (3 bays, 2 deep) lol. I also want some living space up above and a 200 amp electrical service and plumbing/drainage etc.

The garage at my house is 4000 square feet, 40 x 100, with two 9x9 doors and one 8x8 door.
The garage for my work is 3000 square feet, 50 x 60, with two 10x12 doors and one 12x12 door.

My shop at home is 24x30 (all my wife would allow as she had plans for a garden when we bought the place). I put wood stakes in to show her the footprint before I built it, and after she said ok I bumped them out a couple feet in every direction. She still thinks its 20x26.
It houses my '30 Ford sedan, my dirty homemade hardtail, my gun shop and all the other stuff I've accumulated in the 10 yrs we've lived here. My old 4Runner is no longer an issue as I sold it on Thursday (I'm gonna regret that in a couple days or so) but its busting at the seams.
I recently signed a lease on a new yard, office, and shop for work so soon I'll have a 50x80 haven for my toys. Its a work in progress, the landlord is telling me the electrical and mechanical will be done by fall. I really hope so, my home shop isn't really big enough to house much. My plan is to move all the car/bike related stuff to the new joint and keep the home shop strictly for gunsmithing.
I'm getting tired of stepping over piles of stuff to get across my shop, and the Marauder needs a roof over its head for the winter. It was parked outside all last winter and I feel shame for that as it was garage kept since new before I bought it.
