I just purchase and received a cobra timing cover. It has a small (1’’ x 1’’) crack. I placed a flashlight on the crack, no light shined through. Looks like tool markings from a pulley puller/remover, probably used an impact. The crack bulges about a millimeter from the inside.

Questions are…

Is this timing cover usable?

Will this affect any moving components?

Am I better off buying the custom brackets or using this timing cover?

Is it cracked thru? If not you could probably tap the high spot back down and call it a day. Too bad you don't live close, I'd bring my kit over and do a dye penatrant inspection on it.

With it lifted out and right next to a seal...I'd say no go. The thought od the seal area being distorted would scare me off cause I HATE leaks!

CBT is right though, if you have access to dye penetrant, push it back in and then check it.

Its not cracked through. On the front side where the tool indents are, there are no crack(s).

Tool dents could have "displaced" material, covering a crack....I'd tap flat and go get some penetrant & developer from your local welding supply house.
Someone told me an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure....

Thanks! In the case the cover is not usable. How much are the custom brackets?

I actually used my old timing cover when I put in my cobra motor. I still have the new Cobra Timing cover...

PM me if you have interest in it. I will have to look at a estimated value on it, but I will be very reasonable!!!!

I would not use it without, at a minumum, repairning the crack. Also, I think as Chris Curless said, the seal may be distorted. It sure would suck to find that out after teh motor was buttoned up and installed.

I don't see why you couldn't have someone tig weld it.

I wouldnt bother to use it, if you weld it, and install it, start the car and it leaks! how will you feel about that?

I'd tap it back down and weld it. Or clean it up good and JB weld it. I doubt it tweaked the seal boss.

This. Not much JB weld can't fix! :p

Does anyone know if a Lincoln Aviator is the same part? This one is really cheap.
*Similar to 03 04 Mach 1 but apparently there are differences.

I believe our timing covers are the same as the mach1 and thats it. Ours have a half circle shape on the left side of the cover.
