Will a Motorcraft alternator for an 03-04 Mach 1 fit our car? It appears to be the same however it has a different part number. Anyone?

Part numbers are different.
Motorcraft MM alternator: GLV8547RM
Motorcraft Mach 1 alternator: GLV8616RM

No it wont fit.

I believe our alternator is a 4G. The Mustang is a 3G.

The ad I saw for this Mach 1 Motorcraft alternator said it was a 4G thats why I was wondering because I knew the part numbers were different but it says it is 130amp and looked identical to ours.

I have a Marauder alternator on my Mach 1. I compared it to a Mach 1 alt and also verified the part numbers crossed before installing it.

I believe the 3G alternator is deeper than the 4G and will cause fitment issues on the MM.

3G, 4G, what's another G?

I have no idea of the "G" for a Mach alt, all I know is they were interchangeable when I checked.

I have encountered alternators that will physically fit, but not work due to a difference in the voltage regulator. Good luck!!

Does the Mach have a clutched pulley? That may also be a difference.

Ok I have another question. I found a 4g alternator for a grand marquis that appears to be the same as a factory MM alt. Only difference I can see is that it does not have the clutch pulley. Could I take my clutch pulley off my factory alt and put it on this one? Reason I ask is because the Grand Marquis alt I found is at a good price and its higher output.

Why not use the pulley that is on it?

I thought we had to use the clutch pulley?

No, in fact when doing a Trilogy install you replace the clutched pulley with std solid one because of reversing the rotation direction. Runs fine boosted w/o clutched alt pulley. :burnout:

I have not heard of one. I've also installed larger diameter, non-ratcheting, pulleys on MMs and they worked fine.

HHmmmm I did not know that, was always under the assumption you had to have the clutched pulley. Then why did ford use the clutch pulley on ours? What was the purpose of it?

to free up some more power when at WOT

The clutch pulley is ideal to allow the alternator to retain it's momentum and energy, not squealing the belt and shocking the tensioner during shifts.

Actually, this improved version by Litens (http://www.decouplerpulley.com/) could be ideal and supposedly was OEM for the 2004 police interceptor. Dampens torsional pulses transmitted through the belt and overall smooths out the pulley system.

Alternators seem like a silly subject for hotrods, but I just eliminated 90% of a buzzing/rattling noise on my engine by replacing the serpentine belt and components. But there is a bit of noise left as the engine revs up.

I suspect the alternator clutch or bearings. I'll be replacing it with good stuff, heavy duty bearings (http://www.rjminjectiontech.com/collections/alternator-accessories/products/alt-bearings)and possibly the Litens OAD pulley.
