View Full Version : Pump shuts off early...

So when I fill up the MM, the pump shuts off early. (Automatic shut off)
I've put over 10k miles on the car since June, and this has started happening over the last 10 fill ups or so.
Sometimes it will cut off a couple gallons from full, sometimes it won't take a full gallon. The other day I held the pump at a drip just to full it up a little. It is driving me crazy. wtf
Also, I've been to at least 3-4 pumps, so that isn't the problem.
Any ideas what the problem could be? Something wrong with the filler tube?

do you put the gas nozzle all the way up to the boot? sometimes if you keep the nozzle just slightly out of your tank, you shouldn't have any issues.
I am not sure if it has something to do with the gas vapors. my old marauder had this problem too. I could never put a gas nozzle all the way in without it shutting off. I also could never slide the auto lock mechanism on the gas nozzle. i'm used to it now.
also try filling up at a slower pace (i.e. don't squeeze the pump as hard as you can to fill up). see if you get the same result.

I'll give that a try, thanks.

I saw what you did there, I was going to be polite. For once. :)
OP, do you have this problem at different gas stations? There's nothing that should cause this other than the pump handle design. The only time I have this happen is at the mini-mart on Langley AFB, and it happens about half the time, friggin annoying. Have to hold the nozzle damn near out of the filler tube because of the rubber boot on the pump handle. If the rubber boot is firmly over the top of the filler tube, it just clicks off almost as soon as I squeeze the trigger. Sucks when it's freezing out!

yes this is what happened with my old MM. If the boot is over the filler tube, the pump clicks off.

I just tried to top off at the same pump as yesterday, using mebot's suggestion. Same result. I'll keep trying.
And yes, I have been filling up all over NOVA..,

They same thing happens to me at certain stations. Try pulling the nozzle out about an inch.

.
Don't rule-out a clogged EVAP canister .....
Usually caused by over-filling. i.e. The nozzle -clicks-off- and you force-in more fuel.

Thanks for the info fbm. (Before this started happening, I had no idea how that worked) I kept it out a little this morning, didn't help, but I'll keep trying.
It is just crazy that I've been driving 15 years, probably 200k miles, and never had a problem. And I put 10k on the MM before this started happening.

I didn't know there was such a thing. Might be worth switching out the next time I am in for service.

Where is this piece of crap located? Sounds like useless weight I can remove next time I'm under the hood.

It's located externally on the bottom of the fuel tank. Remove it and let us know how it goes....
