View Full Version : Shifting problems redux

Took MM to dealer for shifting problems and a wiggly drivers side mirror.
They had to order the mirror. And they could not find a problem with the trans or adjustments. They even gave me the Oasis search result. Nothing. But the problem has been reported and recorded.
Problem is not going into R from N. And the bigger problem is the trans has failed to upshift 3 different times. Last time found myself doing 60 mph at 4k rpm. Had to shift in and out of N 2 times before something decided 4k was too much for a normal throttle setting at 60 and put me into OD. :-)
If anyone else has shift problems please get your dealer to look at it and register the problem.

Donald:
Back on 7-17-02, Jim started a thread called "Fellow owners, check your car!" In it he describes a problem (similat to yours) with the shifting of his transmission. A section of the wiring harness split and exposed the transmission selector sensor wire and chaffed it. Take a trip back and read these posts and check the photos. It may be your problem.

Also, when I took my MM in for the throttle cable fix they put a new bracket in the car that fixes that wiring harness issue. So it must be a known issue in the system.
Worth getting that done. Check into it for sure.

Bill,
Well, my harness goes no where near the sharp piece of metal mentioned in the pic.

I have found a way to show my problem. I start in 1st. Manually shift to 2nd. Hold it until I am at 3500 RPM. Shift to D. Trans upshifts to 3rd. And that is it. No 4th. I can back off the gas and let RPM drop and then slowly add gas. RPM goes back up to where it was but no upshift. Shifting to N and then to D seems to wake something up and then I get 4th.

Donald, mine shifts the same. Has since new. Been back to dealer, no luck. Hard problem to trace because as soon as you turn car off or put in park, problem goes away. Mine is up for winter, try leaving in gear, with e-brake on and dragging service rep out to car.Good luck, and poost if you get anywhere.

Mine did the same..................
The dealer needs to adjust the shifter cable.
This has been posted here in the past.
Mine also had the shifter cable in contact with the left exhaust manifold.
New cable+adjustment=problem cured.

cyclone, not sure mine is cable problem. Seems to do it if you take off with o.d. button in off position then get uo to speed and release button.Nothing happens, no upshift, nothing! Dealer has had it in and can't seem to find it. If you stop car and put in park, or just turn off and re start it works again:confused: Seems like electrical problem to me? oh well, still gets to 145 in 3rd, but its still annoying.

You say you get 145 in 3rd?
Take the chip out and see if it works.
Is the problem repeatable?

Cyclone, yes this problem was here before i had chip put in. I had an appointment for this problem when my chip, plugs, and t-stat came in, so I had dealer checking on shift problem then put other parts in. Did not really notice it until about 800 miles, but I was not really DRIVING it too much until then[tried to obey speed limits, change speeds often, and only floored it for brief periods]. Problem still comes and goes:(

LOL!
Thats about when mine started too.
When I started "driving" the car without looking at the tach.
Hope they don't try to blame the chip anyway.

I had the same up-sifting from 3rd to 4th problem also but it has only done it once when I was driving it really hard.
I
I also have noticed if you leave your trany shift lever in 2nd and drive it so it naturally shifts from 1st to 2nd, it will stay in 2nd gear and not down-shift to 1st gear if you stop and start. May be a positive if driving on snow and ice. My 2000 LS would start off in 2nd or 3rd.
Has any one else noticed this?
See you on the 5th from Eureka , IL.!

I have noticed a "Lag" on the 3 to 4 shift as though it were slipping! I'm thinking is due to the high stall converter! any one have anything on this?

Under normal cruising conditions where I feather the throttle through traffic, the tranny "hunts" and feels like it's slipping. This is true at 30 MPH, as well as expressway speeds. Once I give it firm, steady acceleration, the hunt is over. This was the case before adding my chip, which I can shut off at will. I've never had any experience with a stall controlled TQ such as this, I grew up eating Muncies. But, as long as things lock up when told to, I'm not going to let this feeling of slippage worry me.

This is my tranny problem.
Normal RPM at 50 in 4th is 1550.
Manually start in 1st. Shift to 2nd. Hold until at 50 mph. RPM is 3350. Shift to D. RPM drops to 2250. And stays. Turn off OD. Stays at 2250.
Tells me it is in 3rd. Only way to get to 1550 rpm is to shift into neutral and back to D.
Car goes in 12/26. And my sub is rattling.

Rather than going to neutral, try pushing the shifter foward against the stop (do this while in drive and do NOT push the button in) and see if it goes ahead and shifts to O/D. Mine will, and that is what convinced me once and for all that it is just a linkage adjustment problem. Just need to get it in to the dealer and let them take care of it.

Russ,
Pushing against stop did not help. Got car back from dealer. The manual shifting 'problem' is fixed. And the normal shift points seem more precise.

so what did the dealer say was the problem?

On mine, the dealer adjusted Transmission Selector linkage to Service Manual settings(centered in detent) and now everything works normal. My only noticeable problem was not going into Reverse from Neutral.
