TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's biggest auto maker, Toyota Motor Corp. (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news?p=%22Toyota%20Motor%0ACor p.%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) - web sites (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22Toyota+Motor%22)), said on Tuesday that the U.S. government has launched an investigation into three of its vehicle models, including the Camry -- its best-selling model in the United States -- over an alleged defect that causes sudden acceleration.

On Monday, the U.S. highway safety authority announced that it had received reports of 30 crashes that injured at least five people, when some Toyota Camry, Camry Solara and Lexus ES300 vehicles suddenly and unexpectedly surged forward.

"One of the noted injuries was serious: it occurred when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle which allegedly surged forward unexpectedly," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news?p=%22National%20Highway%2 0Traffic%20Safety%0AAdministra tion%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) - web sites (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22National+Highway+T raffic+Safety+Administration%2 2)) (NHTSA) said in a statement released on the Internet.

An estimated 1,010,000 vehicles from the 2002 and 2003 model years could be affected, according to the NHTSA.

A spokeswoman for Toyota confirmed the NHTSA's investigation into the three models, but she said she could not give further details of the investigation.

Shares in Toyota earlier ended Tokyo trade up 0.51 percent at 3,950 yen, against a 0.25 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei average.

I only thought Ford got press like this. I hope people start to see that Toyotas have problems too. Usually the press hides this kind of information about them.

The difference: Toyota stock raised on the Nikkei. US auto stocks would have dropped. Go figure...

Seems like these stories never make the 11:00 news unless it's Ford or GM... Heres another:

Honda recalling 440,000 Civics, Insights

Reuters, Mar 2 2004

DETROIT, March 2 (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co. Ltd. <7267.T> is recalling about 440,000 of its Civic and Insight small cars after discovering they are prone to sudden low-beam headlight failures, federal safety regulators said on Tuesday.

"An unexpected loss of low beams could result in a crash," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site.

It said 2001-2002 model year Civics and 2000-2002 Insights were subject to the recall, which was prompted by overheating in the headlight switch.

The Insight was the first gas-electric hybrid car sold by Honda in North America.

Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker, told NHTSA in a letter late last month that no accidents or injuries had been linked to the headlight malfunction.

It's been said that one shouldn't take pleasure in the misfortunes of others, BUT: balanced against the army of liberals that love to report on problems at Ford, GM and Chrysler, I can't stifle a small :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The American cosumer buys Jap cars the Japs laugh at us while they collect our money the Nikkei goes up, they laugh more. They buy into the media companies and fill the deep pockets of the American politicans with excess cash. Then they have the politicans do investagations into the North American car compaies and have the media report it so it is blown out of proportion.

Parnoid me, nah. But there is a conspiracy, trust me.
