Would someone please explain to me why an X-Pipe is a good thing?

What does it do that straight duals or an H-Pipe does not do?

Where in the exhaust system should the X-pipe be located?

The X-pipe is mounted between the cats and the mufflers. It replaces the H-pipe.

It should be installed as close to the cats as possible, just behind the crossmember.
