Something apparently happened when I was on MM.net this morning. I was checking my emails and clicking on the links to new messages in various threads, and all of a sudden my internet browser closed. No big deal, I opened the browser back up, but every time I try to go to mercurymarauder.net (or .com) as soon as the page opens, the Internet Explorer shuts down and I'm staring at my desktop.
I can type into the address bar mercurymarauder.net/forums and get to the forums page without the browser crashing, but no way can I get to the start page for the site.
I must have picked up some kind of bug or something. Other web pages aren't crashing the browser. Any ideas? And remember, I'm not a techno-geek, so keep it simple, please. Thanks for any help. :depress: :help:

If you don't already have them, I'd strongly recommend a good utility suite like Norton System Works. Run the virus scan and let it clean up anything it finds. Then run Norton Disk Doctor and repair any errors. Next, run Norton WinDoctor to clean up any errors in the registry. Finally, a good disk defragmentation with Norton Speed Disk will get everything running quickly again.

Can't promise this'll fix your woes, but I can promise that going forward you'll see less trouble if you routinely take these steps. I run Nortons' utilities on my Macs and PCs and they've saved me a lot of grief. Worth the price for the product, IMO.

Good luck!

Thanks, Fourth. This is my computer at the office, and we run some pretty strong anti virus stuff from what I am told. I know that things can still sneak through, though.

If it's at your office, your MIS administrator may have done something. It's possible for them to see everywhere you have been, and they may have done something as a result of use??? When at work I always hit this site jumping from a search engine, and never save cookies on their computer. However temporary internet files are still stored. Get in the habit of looking for the folders these files reside in and delete them daily as well as your history.

Well, I did a virus scan, and found a few questionable files, so I deleted them. Still get knocked off when I go to the home page!

Sheesh! I tried coming onto the forums page, and from there clicking on the home page icon to get there through the backdoor. Still knocked me off! There's something on my computer that is just related to that page.

Try clearing your caches and what not and restarting the computer afterwards. I don't think it's a virus. Do you have kids? Do you keep a porn blocker on the computer because of kids? It might find something questionable on the website, a word or something...and that shouldn't shut it down, but some of them suck, we had one like that for the little kid that did that kinda stuff all the time.

The Internet Explorer privacy settings may have taged the URL for this site as questionable.
When this happens, everytime you attempt to access the site, Internet Explorer will simply close.

Go to the top of the MSIE window and click on TOOLS.
Then click on Internet Options.
Click on the Privacy tab, and then the EDIT button.
There you can add www.mercurymarauder.net and click on ALLOW.
This will update your privacy settings and hopefully allow you to view this site.

If it still doesn't work, then speak with your MIS Department about your PC usage at work.
Some workplaces have strict rules about using your work PC for personal use.
If they've blocked your access to this site, then they already know what web sites you've been accessing.

James and Pete, I tried both of your suggestions and nothing works. I have occassionally had something like this happen before. It would sometimes happen when I tried to click on a news link from the msn start page. Never had it happen here, though.

As far as the cache flush, try this from a DOS window command prompt and reboot:

C:\IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

I'm still thinking you have been administratively blocked, particularly if you did what MENINBLK suggested in your IE tools tab.

I'm just trying to figure, if I've been admin blocked, why they didn't block my personal email site which I visit as much as I do this site?

I did add some Javascript to the front page. Your browser might not be liking it... :(

Anyone else?

I forgot to add that you may have to reboot your computer for it to work.
In most cases, just shutting down MSIE and restarting it is all it needs.

You ask a good question.
Most Network Management software comes with the ability to recognize email sites
and can distinguish between email sites and other sites.
If you've logged an abnormal amount of queries to mm.net and your MIS department has been tracking it,
they may have blocked you from it for time management purposes.
They don't want you spending your time browsing this site.

Send your MIS people an email and ask them why you can't access mm.net and you can access other sites.
See what they respond to you with.
After all, the mya BE a problem with the system that they aren't aware of and you've stumbled across it.

Hi Ross,

As .com and .net both cause the crash I am doubtful your IS dept blocked both sites. When we block a site the browser doesnt crash you get re-directed to a page that basically tells you to get back to work (course I dont block web sites I like since its my job :) )

Have you deleted your cookies at the same time you cleared your IE cache....Do you have nay other web browsers installed?

Java is a tricky little program. If you dont have the correct plugin for the content you are trying to load the system/IE can crash. Do you have any errors in your event log?

Lots of good suggestions guys. I have cleared cache and cookies a couple of times since this started. Restarted and completely shut down a couple of times. Did virus scan and deleted some files that came up looking funny. Last night I downloaded Netscape to see if I could go in through Netscape instead of Internet Explorer. Still crashed the browser. Our computer guy is supposed to be coming in today. I'll check with him and ask what's up if I'm around while he's here.

Just the "no plugin" error in Mozilla FireFox because I'm too lazy to install it. :)

Which brings me to another suggestion, Ross: dump IE and get a better browser. IE is such a piece of garbage. Microsoft seriously needs to foad.

Ranger, I tried that, then clicked on the link that Google gave me. Knocked me off as soon as the page started loading. Also clicked on the link in my Favorite Places. Knocked me off again.
