What do you guys have? My old pioneer unit was stolen and I am looking to replace it. I have been looking online on Ebay and Amazon for a pioneer AVH-x8500, x7500 or x5500.
It doesn't have to be a double din but I would like to stay under $500. Do guys have any recommendations?

I just (well FBM actually) installed a Kenwood 9140 a month ago. Still learning all the bells and whistles. It's got stuff that I probably will never use...lol. Lucked into it off ebay for $425; unit was practically brand new.
Only cons so far:
--Lost functionality of my CD changer
--Still need to install the component to regain steering wheel controls
--I listen to a lot of 'mix' CDs; even though one song goes right into the next, the unit puts a one-second 'dead air' spot between tracks
Hoping to remedy the last con by loading my music onto a thumbdrive; changing CDs has become a somewhat cumbersome task again and I need to upgrade from this 'old' technology anyways...

What's "double din"?
A Single Din is the standard size of a head unit (the stereo in the dash of your car) a Double Din is twice as large.
The Marauder factory radio is consider a Double Din. The radio in your Mark VII is probably a Single Din size unit.

I had the Eclipse AVN6610 in mine. Pro tip for doing these. If you're doing navigation - the speed sense wire is in the radio harness (gray/black) and the dimmer wire (blue/red) can only be verified if you cover the light sensor on the dash. The factory radio will NOT dim if the lights are on in broad daylight.

I like my Kenwood DDX-419 except for the ipod hookup on the front face. Of course the new version has the hookup on the rear of the unit now............ just my luck.

The new kenwood ddx470 is nice but you do need to buy a cable for the ipod or you can bluetooth stream it. or bigger screen go with the ddx770. alpine make some nice units too, a little more but well worth it. and if you buy an alpine get the axxess trigger for the ebrake and footbrake.

Can all of these be made to work with steering wheel controls?

ahh haa. I've never been a fan of these type radios. But after seen them in the Marauders and read their capabilities, if mine goes out or I come across a good deal I think I'm going with these. Thanks for the info.

Not sure who you are asking but the picture I posted is a 6.1" touch screen for the AVIC-X940BT.

A little background. DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung which was the German term for the standard chassis size of 2" high and 7" wide. Double DIN or 2DIN are exactly twice that size, 7" wide and 4" high. The depths are not standardized and anyone that owns some GM vehicles knows that aftermarket radios stick out 2 or so inches unless you go crazy with an airsaw. I did this for over a decade. Todays vehicles have so many proprietary controls integrated in that its a practical impossibility to replace the radio. By design integrated entertainment systems are appealing and handy but in 10 years - you may be looking at a hole in the dash that cannot be filled.

I think that's what Microsoft is really after with My Ford Touch. A customer (willing or not) for the life of the car. Makes it much harder for me to buy a new ford. Find myself mapping out what year a model switched over to avoid it.

I like this one! Just two questions, are those the buttons in the bottom of the screen? And do they switch color or are they only blue?

The unit (AVIC-X940BT) I have allows for button color change.

I would definitely recommend that unit.
Nothing will look stock except the stock headunit.

I looked up some of these "radios" and they are going into the 4 digits in price. Maybe I'm out of touch, but the last one I bought(don't laugh) was a JVC Cassette with 12 disc CD changer in the trunk($300 installed). The one before that was a Pioneer Super Tuner II(two knob) for my Mark V in '93. For these prices, since I keep the radio and car they are in a good long while, how are there endurance???
