View Full Version : Gauge Replacement

I was thinking of repalcing my Auto Meter gauges with these:
http://hp.autometer.com/products/carbon_fiber/electric_gauges/electric_gauges.html
They come with different color filters for different lighting colors.
From reading, we have 2-1/16" electric gauges right?
How difficult is it to replace them? Is it very straight forward plug and play since we already have Auto Meter Gauges if I get the same size electrical gauge?
Thanks...
Danny

I think I may use the red filter for the lighting to match the red "MARAUDER" in the dash under the speedo. I glows red when the lights are on...otherwise, its black.

For most people it's been a very simple process. On my car getting the gauge panel back in place was a cast iron b*tch. Maybe my dash having been removed and put back as part of my crash repairs was a factor, I don't know. The guages themselves are very easy to hook up. You'll also need to replace the oil pressure sender to make the new oil PSI gauge work, but that's a piece of cake as well. Basically, the gauge wiring and sender replacement took me maybe 45 minutes, with 2 hours of hell after that to get the damn panel back in place. :)
You might want to hook up a 12 volt power source to the gauge lights and test that red theory before you go to all the trouble to install them. My guess is that the red filter on the lights will look more pink.

Even the Part numbers are similar:
Ultra-Lite = Oil-4327 & Volt-4391
Carbon Fiber = Oil-4727 & Volt-4791
Even the instructions are the same for all electric 2-1/16" gauges:

Can I assume the Oil Pressure sender is the same?

The gauge itself will plug right in, yes, but you'll also need to replace the sender. It's a simple job, takes just a few minutes, and this way you'll get a true reading on your oil pressure.
The stock gauge, while manufactured for Ford by AutoMeter, does not function the same way as their "real" gauges. I'm not sure what will happen if you hook your new gauge up to the stock sender, but since the gauge comes with the new sender, why not use it? The stock sender and the sender that comes with the after-market gauge are definitely not the same. The stock sender is tiny, about a sixth the size of the after-market unit, and as I understand it functions just as an on/off switch. It does not send real pressure data to the gauge like the after-market unit does. The sender that comes with the after-market gauge has the adapter you need to make it fit in your engine, so it's all a snap. A little thread sealer and you're there.

As I've read in previous posts, the factory guage is a fake one. It's basically an on/off switch and will show 60 lbs on the guage as long as you've got at least 6 lbs actual. The sending unit definitly needs to be replaced. I've also read that even if you replace just the sending unit, the guage will not work properly due to a resister in the guage.
Bottom line: If you want to know actual oil pressure, replace both. :D
I'll most likely be replacing both guages this summer also.
Good luck

Coool. I'm glad I asked. Maybe I'll take a look this weekend if I have some time.
Can I assume the Voltmeter swap is a no brainer??? :D
Thnaks Again!!!

I went with the stock looking gauges, but did do the red lights. It looks cool, if you do it I think you'll like it.:beatnik:

Did they turn out looking truly red or is it sorta pinkish? I was really gun shy about trying the red ones.
