So my long journey of creating a software instrument that could approximate engine exhaust notes is nearing an end, I'll be bringing a finished product to market soon.

Anywho, I thought I'd share that as well as some sound clips of various engines. Hope it's enjoyable. :) Any thoughts are welcomed, of course. (I can't find a way to embed the soundcloud player applet, sorry. Above each link is the title of the type of engine being synthesized.)

Also, for anyone that'd be interested in purchase, I will be offering a non-tweakable, preset-only "player" version at a significantly reduced price for those that just want an extra little toy for fun.

BMW M5 has synthesized engine noise piped into the passenger compartment as do a few others. It syncs into the stereo somehow. Seems cheesy to me.

Thanks for the kind words guys. :) You really almost do have to have a large, full-range sound system cranked up fairly high to get the full effect of some of these sounds, especially the motorcycle; you gotta FEEL it to get the most out of it. ;)

Yeh, I would find that a bit strange to. This tool is primarily designed for sound foley usage though, either for movie/tv work or for video game design. Also for those that, say, want to have the pleasure of revving a Harley or Ferrari or hot rod engine from their desktop. :)

The BMW trick is for noise cancellation. It takes a sample of the sounds and put out sound of the exact same volume, but 180° out of phase.

BluGruv, I LOVE the big turbo diesel...sounds like an old 2-stroke Jimmy.

Whatchu talkin' 'bout Baub? Just watched the Top Gear episode on the M5. BMW is piping synthesised exhaust sounds into the cabin so you don't have to have the window down and muss up you hair.:shake: The new twin turbo V-8 they are using in the M5 though sounds awesome.
