He didn't turn on cpap. He did insert the nose thingy tho. Don't get results for a week. Worse part was driving there in the rain and chill with no heat.

It was worse night than i normally have. Equipment didn't bother me. Back in my Jehri curl days (when i had hair) used sleep with a head full of curlers  so this was a piece of cake.

Man o man. That's rough brother.

With wireless technologies. One would think you can do the sleep test at home, under normal circumstances, in your own surroundings etc etc.

I would think people's results would be much more realistic.

Thanks,
Yeah, finally trying to get it taken care of. Don't have insominia just the opposite. Sleep but not quality sleep. Eyes closed for 5 to 6 hrs during the night, but still feel sleepy through out the day. Start noddin 30 minutes after sitting down at work. Afternoons is the real struggle. Looking at the computer screen and seeing 7 to 8 lines of the same leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee a few times in 20min span is getting old, and that's while at a client's desk. Fortunately i have a good boss and coworkers. Worse when you start not remembering going from point A to B.

Tech told me 15 events in an hr would warrant turning on the unit. Most people i talk to say the tech woke them to connect the cpap, mine didn't. Woke three times on my own 1 extra blanket 2 nature.

If you're waking up every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to pee, let the dog out etc., and dead tired all day long, don't be surprised if it's triple that, or more.

Fortunately, that routine was during the study.
Normally i only wake one time for nature (usually 1 1/2 before work day and am dead tired all day.

Waymon,

Stick with it brother and best wishes that you get it figured out.

I have been using a CPAP machine for about 8 years now, and never go a night without it.

It takes about 2 weeks to get use to the mask, after that, it's a piece of cake.

I average about 6 hours sleep a day, and feel great as compared to what it was like prior to using the machine.

Keep us posted.

;)

A friend of mine at work uses a cpap. Before he would literally fall asleep at work, on his cell phone, in his truck. Always struggling to stay awake.

Since using his cpap. He sleeps throughout the night and feels awake and alert in the morning and throughout the day.

It made a huge difference in his life.

I know at least four, but there are probably a lot more - it's not something that comes up in conversation unless you know somebody pretty well. It seems like it's becoming fairly common.

From what I've been told, the big indicators are :
1. People complaining that you that you snore like a chainsaw, or telling you that you stop breathing in your sleep sometimes.
2. Waking up a lot to pee, or whatever. This happens because you never really get into a good sleep cycle, so any little thing wakes you up.

That's my problem, i fall a sleep way to easy during the day. If sitting still it is a struggle to stay awake. Walking around only works for that time period. Soon as you sit still you're back at square one. Missed the end of a lot of shows. You pretty much have to be constantly moving or otherwise engaged.

I also took the sleep study. Never got the c pap. Maybe I need to spend the $300 and try it out.

No doubt. If you're having the same issues, especially in traffic. Getting one would be wise. Don't get to the point where you start scaring or stressing yourself.

Pretty much why i put myself out there. Give others a chance to give they're experience and others to decide if they needed to get evaluated specially if you have a sinus condition or allergies.. Mercman and MM03MOK told me a long while back i should get a study done. At the time wasn't as bad so kept procrastinatin. But now...

3. You wake yourself up from snoring or from a snort, and waking up with dry mouth.
4. You find yourself dozing off during the day. Or running on auto pilot.
5. When energy drinks don't do the trick. 5 Hour, RedBull, Monster etc.,

There may be other symptoms, but these are the main ones...

it goes beyond being tired all the time, nodding off easily and all that stuff.

If they recommend a CPAP get it and use it.

Sleep apnea puts a tremendous strain on your heart.

The real danger is that sometimes when your breathing stops, so does your heart. After a few seconds it kicks over and everything restarts, but over the years it runs the whole system down - and it only has to not work once.
I have been told that this is what Reggie White died from. A big, strong, professional athlete, and by all accounts a great guy too.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 6 years ago & had been using a bi-pap machine since. The bi-pap machine pauses to let you exhale & resumes pumping air when you inhale. The c-pap machine continuously pumps air w/o pausing & that didn't work for me real well because it would leave me with a bad case of "dry mouth" & would have to drink water after a couple of hours & THAT interrupted my attempts at sleeping. If the doctor recommends using one after reading the results of the study, USE IT REGULARLY. It could save your life. Not only sleep apnea puts a strain on your heart, but it reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood needed for your body to fight infections & viruses. Ask me how I know.

For those that have been recommended a cpap, do you remember if the tech woke you up to apply or turn on the unit during your sleep study? Mine didn't. Most be i talk to say they were.
There is also another illness called narcolepsy that is also produces the same characteristics. That's even worse imo.

Waymon,

The tech did wake me up when they saw signs of apnea.

In the dark, they came in, put on the mask and walked out in under a minute.

I fell right back to sleep just that fast

The procedure here is to go three times :
On the first visit they do a sleep study, and a Doctor reviews the results later at an office visit.
Then, if he diagnoses that you have apnea, they do a second sleep study to try different masks and air pressures to find the right treatment for you.

My wifey uses a CPAP machine - Has for 4 years now. Been the best four years of my life as she is not snoring and waking me every 5 minutes (literally). Her mood improved, our life is happier (Happy before too) and she is rested. Many positive side effects!!

I wrote a note on the bottom of the bill thanking the DR. for all of MY sleep.

Stick with the CPAP and hope you are feeling better soon!

Not to mention the strain on the spouse who also can't sleep due to the SNORING NOISE. One night I listened and counted off the seconds that my hubby was NOT breathing. I convinced him to get the sleep study. Diagnosis--severe sleep apnea. He's been using the C-PAP for about 5 years, now. Falls asleep immediately and no noise, and I also get better sleep;)

Waymon, hope they find out what it is and you feel better.

Hi everyone. Just an update.
Went to doctor to get results of first test a week ago. Report was of "mild obstructive sleep apnea" tech did not hook up cpap due to not enough events to meet criteria for insurance purposes at the time. Had 8 episodes with a sleep efficency of 84%. Recommendation repeat study for CPAP titration.

Had second study last night to get pressures for a cpap and evaluate different apparatus. I used the nose mask as opposed to the nose (wierd) plugs. Tech said i did good, but sure doesn't feel like it. Only low pressures needed.

Back to doctor in a week to get these results.

About 6 years ago I had all the tests and used a cpap --couldn't tolerate the back pressure-- they didn't offer bipap. Did more serious testing and found a found a serious flaw in the atrio- ventricular bridge-- I had a ventricular pulse at nite of 25 !! Have had a pacemaker for 5 years--- been symptom free ever since. Don' t stop til they find the source cause. Good luck. Mauryi

Good Luck with the sleep study Waymon. Hope this all gets sorted out for you without too much difficulty. Is this also related to the Gastro-Intestinal issues that you were having a couple years ago or something completely unrelated?

I was quite surprised by the number of people who chimed in on this thread that they have sleep issues, sleep studies and CPAPs as well. Must be MUCH more common than I have seen or even read about. Seems to be of Public Health proportions just based on the limited sample here within a very small population. May have to do some research to see just how prevalent the condition is and whether the medical community has established a root cause for the condition. Any docs or nurses want to chime in?

Someone mentioned "Narcolepsy" earlier. That condition is very serious since an afflicted person can fall into a deep sleep without warning EVEN in the midst of physical activity like an ON or OFF switch was flipped. I knew one person who had this condition in the US Army and he was eventually medically retired because of it. He would fall asleep in meetings in mid-sentence. In retrospect there were other indicators; but at the time I just never realized that such a thing was even possible unless you were totally sleep deprived or physically exhausted. Live and Learn.
