View Full Version : any way to change the t-stat without dropping 2 gals of coolant

I run a 192 t-stat in winter, and a 170 Reische stat in summer.

Just put the Reische in last night. Tried to be quick, but those 8mm bolts are a beotch (from up top) and with coolant dripping under isn't an option.

Anyone got some tricks for this job?

hose pliers or pinch clamps used them to change a radiator did not have to burp the system when done. check harbor freight/crafsman

cool! Thanks, didn't know there was such a thing. I looked it up. Costs almost the same as a gallon of 50/50 mix.

I assume I'll need (2). Pic below from Harbor Freight.

Prolly not, theyll give you a 2v thermostat. Member here recenty gave away one they thought was for an MM but wasnt!

Get the Reische unit, my coolant when moving sits at 173-175. A 180 stat gets you 190 coolant (best). Of couse I hot rod mine a lot and have a tune with 20 degrees of timing...

Cool, get a set of those hose pliers too, if you dont want to loose a ton of coolant - lol

follow these directions to make sure you have got no air in the cooling system after you install new tstat:

while this is my first mod motor rebuild its not my first motor build. at the end of the day its just nuts and bolts. lol my arm is still sore from torquing down the head bolts but its been fun. and ya i ordered a muscle merc rear head cooling kit and his template for the godshead. i gotta get martyo some numbers tonight from my tuner and my pcm and he is going to make me a new tune. cant wait to see what the car is like with new cams and the right tuning!

I have successfully burped the last two cars before I even started the engine by spending almost 10 minutes squeezing every hose on the system until not a hint of air was left. I still ran them for quite awhile but both took absolutely zero more. I am sure that having the rear cooling mod on both cars helped this process of air elimination, and am confident enough now to fill it and cap it with no mess.

Either way, this pre burp works great.

I also run the Reische, works great no issues whatsoever.
But then again I am also running the CCT delete and no coolant reservoir, radiator with cap and puke tank.

And those pinch pliers work great, I have a couple different styles in my toolbox.
