My odometer quit working at 5666 miles. Should I get it fixed, or change my moniker to My odometer ends in 666?

I don't like the idea of having my dash torn apart. I don't have any unusual shakes or rattles yet, and I would like to keep it that way.

On the other hand, without it, how am I going to keep up on schedualed maintenance?

This same thing happened to my friends Martix. It was a sensor down by the wheel. They didnt touch the dash. Maybe there is something wrong somewhere other than behind the dash????

Just a thought....

I think it's in the instrament cluster itself because the speedo works fine.

Maintanence without the odometer would not be too bad. If the oil looks bad, smells bad, change it, same for other fluids as well. Even if the fluids don't look real bad it would not harm the car to change fluids more than recommended, I don't mean every week or anything. Tearing apart the dash can be a scaring thing. Good Luck.

Use the tripometer.

One point, if you do go, say it just happened and you drove it there. Here in NY they'd hit your title with a broken speedo and print it on your title.

I hope this thread was intended to be tongue-in-cheek...

If not, then by all means get it fixed...there are too many maintenance items, not to mention your warranty, that depend on mileage...

As far as changing the oil when it "looks bad, smells bad", that's dangerous advice...oil (and other fluids) can look OK, but the additive package may be depleted, or the TBN could have dropped too low; by the same token, if it looks bad and smells bad, it's WAY too late...especially with transmission fluid...

I had a speedo go south in a Sable I owned a few years back. It may be Alabama law, but the dealer replaced the speedo cluster with a "Red" speedo, that is the tenths digit was red to indicate that the speedo had been replaced. They also put a sticker on the edge of the driver's door.

When I traded the car in, the dealer I traded it to made a huge deal about the speedo making the trade value take a huge knock. I had to cough up documents (warratee receipt) showing it had been replaced under warrantee, and the estimated mileage at the time of repair. It was a PITA. Not to mention I had to sign a lot of extra documents that swore the odometer change was accurate, blah, blah, blah.

On the other hand, my VW Scirocco snapped a speedo cable and it took the dealer 3 months to get another in stock. In that case the repair did nothing to the speedo, only the cable, and the milage I put on the car never showed on the odometer. That, too, was a PITA, because I could only judge my speed based on tach readings in each gear. (I had a buddy drive along side me in his car and he'd point to me when we hit 15-20-25-30, etc. I noted the RPMS in each gear and made up a chart that I taped to the dash. I know, geeky as hell, but at least I didn't get a speeding ticket)

I think the dash odometer is just a display and not the actual odometer. The actual mileage is stored in the computer. Therefore, if someone either buys your car or you take it to the dealer and they read the cpu, they will know your actual mileage. You could get hit for fraud if a buyer finds out. I may be wrong. But, I think I heard someplace that the OD was just a repeater. Get it fixed so you don't have to worry about getting caught.

I just wish it could be done without haveing to tear the dash apart. I've had to change heater cores in two previouse LM cars (An 85 TC and an 88 GM)
Boath cars picked up rattles in the dash after that.

If I'm lucky it will be something in the conector at the computer. Shall I cross my fingers?

Why don't you just fix your ODO and if your dash rattles afterwards complain to the dealer?

I would recommend you have the dealer fix it under warranty. You can judge your mileage buy your fuel consumption. Record the fuel purchased and assume 20 MPG. IE 10 gallons of fuel equals 200 miles. It will give you a rough estimate.

I hope this makes you feel better:

When I bought the Lincoln LS for my wife, the very first thing I noticed was an odd spider looking haze / fog on the INSIDE of the plastic view window covering the speedo-tach area on the dash. I requested they replace it before delivery. We have not had a problem in 3 years with the instrument panel in any way. All is well.

well,.. you could have a 2003 Marauder with 5666 miles on it in the year 2038!

I voted for repair, there are too many complications down the road regarding warranty and auto insurance that could be bigger headaches than a dash cricket. My insurance rates are affected by my mileage. OASIS tracks mileage too, and should someone detect inconsistency, the onus is on you to prove you didn't roll the mileage back. A few years from now, you may not be able to sell or trade the vehicle at a fair price, in some states not at all. Skip all that, eh?

I've had my dash apart, it's not a big deal. What I've learned is that the gauge pod contains sub assemblies, and the speedo is one of them. It works off an electronic signal, not a speedo cable, and it contains two small motors. One drives the speedo and the other drives the odometer with plastic gears. They could be stuck, damaged, or just unplugged. If you are familiar with home computers, this connector is much like early sound card/CDRom audio connectors, it could have slipped off. Other than this, it's somewhat a sealed unit.

Thanks.
She has been setting in the drive way ever sence monday. I have an appointment to get her fixed tomorow. The service guy even said they might be able to roll the speedo up to catch up to what the computer says she's got.
I just hope I don't pick up any "crickets" :alone:

I was going to say in the past when I brought speedo's in to be fixed off the car, the shop would ask if I wanted the same mileage indicated. If it was yes, then the sticker just showed repaired on the speedo head and no door sticker required. It I wanted it set back to "0" then I had to put on the door sticker and the head sticker indicated what the mileage at repair was. So if they can put the accurate mileage on it, no disclosure other than repair is needed...

Your doing the right thing getting it fixed promptly. Not that it would stop someone from doing what they are gonna do, right or wrong, but the back of the Washington Vehicle Certificate Of Ownership (your title) states; "Federal and state law requires that you STATE THE MILEAGE in connection with the transfer of ownership. Failure to complete odometer state or providing a false statement may result in fines and/or imprisonment." You then write in your odo reading and check one of 3 boxes. "1. The mileage stated is the ACTUAL MILEAGE of the vehicle. 2. the mileage is in EXCESS OF ITS MECHANICAL LIMITS. 3. The odometer reading is NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE. - WARNING - AN ODOMETER DISCREPANCY EXISTS BETWEEN THE ACTUAL ODOMETER READING AND THE ACTUAL MILEAGE." It also says "AN ODOMETER DISCLOSURE MUST BE COMPLETED FOR TRANSFER OF ALL VEHICLES LESS THAN TEN YEARS OLD." This is probably way to much info but hope it helps and the repair goes well with no squeeks!

AAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

While taking the car in to the shop for said problem, I got stoped by Tumwater PD. Said I was doing 42 in a 25, but only wrote me for 30. Nice little $91 ticket. At least he gave me a small white sheet of paper to go along with it telling me how I can get it dropped and off my record. :(
