Last Saturday I happened to be coming back from a friend's house and I saw a sign "Airplane fly-in and classic car show" so I decided to stop by. It was on an airport where my airplane is well known and many have seen the Marauder. I stupidly followed the signs to the car show area. I pulled all the way across the show line---about 20 cars and then backed into a slot. Before I could even get out of my car, "Bubba" comes out and says " Mister, you can't park here, you will have to park on the street--this is for show cars only" . I pointed to the decals showing shows and competitions , he said it didn't make any difference, Grand Marquis weren't show cars and he had been told to tell me to park on the street or I could leave ( there were NEW Challengers, Mustangs and Camaro in the line). Completely against my usual response, I calmly and quietly drove away BUT, when I got back on the public road, they found out what a Marauder sounds like at 6,000 rpm (low gear to 50mph ;)). Within 5 minutes I was talking to a friend of mine I had seen in the crowd and told him what I thought of the folks running the show--- My point here is-----1 Marauder can be misidentified, but, if I had pulled in with 3 -5 Marauders, we would have been immediately accepted. That is why it is so important that we work as groups when we go to shows---once they see we are not "blinged-out" CVs, we are accepted with open arms. Soooooo, support your local activities folks and let them know what you want to do--we can't do anygthing without you individuals-----together we conquer, divided we fall. Let's let people know who we are !!!!! Maury

Been there done that, went to a local Tuesday night show with the Marauder and the Impala SS and was asked to move them both to the street...the young lady was quickly corrected by an older gentleman who begged us to stay...most of the younger crowd have no idea what these cars are...so sad to not know what a true rear wheel drive, V-8, full framed, American car is!

Never had this happen with the Black but we have had this happen twice with the SB. One show was admittedly for pre-72 cars but they do let newer cars park around the periphery of the show field. 1st time it happened we followed an MGB onto the field and they guy is like 'park over there' and I say 'why' and he says 'field is for show cars only' and I say 'it is a show car it's a Marauder'....Crickets from the guy. So not wanting a confrontation the guy asks us to park near the exit and he'll go ask an organizer. So I park and open up the hood and as he passing by he looks in and goes 'Holy S***' Never heard from and organiser either way after that.

So it's not only the youngin's who don't know what Marauders are, geezers need to be educated as well at these shows. Now if I could only find my "cop chip" pamphlet.

Sorry you had the bad experience. I'd be PO'd too. I think that I may have pushed the situation a little further if new Chargers, Challengers, Camaros were there as OK for the line.... and asked to speak with someone who knows cars. However, your response was the classy thing to do.

Suggest that you write a letter to the organizers of the event and suggest that if they are going to have a car show that they at least have people on site who can identify limited production cars when they see them.

Its amazing how many so called "car people" dont know wut a marauder is. I was at a car show recently and the "judge" said nice cop car. Never even heard of a marauder before. With all the people who dont know about these cars the ones who do and give you compliments make it that much sweeter.

Screw show cars.

Sorry guys, but you get more respect at an Import show than Domestic. The kids have never seen a Marauder. All you have to do is turn it on and not insult their Honda, even if you don't like it. Actually, I notice more people at Import shows paying attention than Domestic. Unless you have a one of 50,000 with 2,000 sunny miles they don't care. 200,000 miles and a mean V8... the Import guys come over and want to learn about your car. Verses someone with a modern pony car who wants to tell you how much he spent and how he never uses it.... its his third car. Lol

Marauders are overlooked by generation x and baby boomers at Domestic car shows.

After 41 years of driving my Mercurys, I have realized the common person knows Mustangs, corvettes, and camaros. (Barrett-Jackson Auctions is a current example)

Mercurys were for the Ford enthusiasts who knew. From the start of Mercury, in the 40s, the first cars had upgraded power output from the fords. 1940 Merc had 15% more power than the 1940 Ford. The newer mercurys had the updated luxury items from Lincoln but without the price and show (display of wealth). The Mercury Marauder has the upgraded power output compared to the Ford CV.

I am happy I have a Marauder "sleeper" as I do not want to get too much attention from the police and still have a little fun.

You nailed it. The Marauder is a factory "sleeper" and that's what I love about it. I don't rally want attention from anyone. (BTW, I am an LEO and I'm hanging onto my '09 CVPI for as long as I can... 104,000+ miles and I'll pull the pin when they take it from me...)

I had quite a different experience. I was driving home from visiting my son at college, I was passing through a small town when I saw a sign that said "car show". I kinda needed a break, so I pulled in and spectator parking was a roped off area behind the row of "show cars". I parked behind two nice looking Mustangs that were on the show row. I got out and started wandering around looking at all the cars. Like most car shows, Camaros, Mustangs, Challengers, some nice hot rods, tricked out trucks, and, of course, some ricers. There were about 40 cars there. I was surprised at all the cars for a small town show.

When I went back to my car to leave, there were three guys standing around my car. Two older gentlemen and a guy about 25. The older guys said, Not too many of those Marauders around, I've seen two. The other guy said, I've only seen pictures of these cars. The 25 year old was walking around snapping pictures with his cell phone. We talked about 15 minutes. As I got in to leave, the older guy said, you should of pulled into the "show line", I know a lot of people here would have liked to see it. I gave him my email address, and told him to let me know when the next show was going to be.

Some know, most don't. I smiled all the way home.....:D

Great read, sorry it happened.

My son 16.5 year old son thought my quest to buy a Marauder was a farce... Al the way up until he road in the first test drive and the 65 year old gentleman/owner advised him to "hold on to something" before he floored it.

The gentleman had chipped, tuned, and geared the sleeper SB, he'd bought from new... And all of our heads snapped violently back when it hit second and third.

He was also in disbelief when I flew all the way to TENN to get my ride...

Although when I made him accompany me to Little Rock to drive a segment of my trip down Route 66... Wen he first heard the beast start in the airport parking lot, he began to laugh with glee.

Wile driving around town with me last week, he recieved not one but TWO texts from friends saying they'd seen home and that they loved the car.

Great story!!

I flew to Florida from Arkansas to get mine.....my two boys (15 and 16 years old) had to wait for me to get home the next day.....I did tell them it was a special kind of Merc and they scoffed.....still thought it was pawpaws car until......
I rolled in at 10:30PM and there they were standing in the driveway waiting to see how embarassed they would be when I dropped them at school the next day. I told them to hop in and we left the driveway sideways. I Never said one word to them. Blair said to his brother Auggie, "I am driving this to Junior Senior next year!!" They were sold!! I should be used to it since when I had the two cougars I was always told "Nice Thunderbirds!" The best thing I have is when I was getting my windows tinted, I left and come back and the shop was full of guys asking me if I knew what I had. Man I wish I lived in an area where our car elicits questions and/or admiration. Since I have owned a Marauder (including my original one when I bought it 2006) i can count on one hand the number of people who have said something to me about the car.

In the northern VA/Washington DC area it just gets swallowed up by the humdrum Lexus', BMW's, Audi's, Mercedes and Range Rovers on the road. But its still cool to see these stories come out from other area of the country!

I went to a show today to see my buddy with a 67 camaro and headed toward the public parking, and was redirected next to a 55 chevy :D

I told the guy I wasn't staying long he said that's fine and complimented me on the car. Got plenty of looks to boot:banana2:

Guess its just who's heading the show:dunno:

I got turned away at a 3 day "Street Machine Weekend" in Lethbridge, Alberta a few years ago. The town is very Chevy oriented and a few of us Ford guys make the pilgrimage out there to get some blue oval representation.

They had a "cruise" on Fri Night, 100' drags (really just a burnout and 1st gear pull is all it is, actually quite fun to watch) on Sat and a show on Sun. They turned me away from the cruise because it was for "rare special interest cars only", so I just went over to the 100' drag registration and got a free registration for the show on Sunday. My friends asked me why I wasn't in the cruise and I told them what the staff said. They said "That describes your car exactly".

I watched the cruise from the sidelines to take pictures of my friend's in their Shelbys Cobra and Lightning. I also noticed a lot of stock V6 auto Mustang convertibles in the cruise, the only reason I could see why they were in there was because the drivers were 18 and female.

Saturday came and I sat in the pits, Mickey Thompsons already bolted on and left the hood closed except for about 30 seconds while teching. No one gave the car a second glance. When it was my turn to go I rolled into the burnout box, did a quick burnout and rolled up to the line. The announcer didn't even mention it was a Marauder, said "it looks like we have an airport taxi here" as I was staging; most of the crowd was sitting there not paying too much attention.

Once the light went green all hell broke loose. Nothing but a shrill scream from the ported Trilogy and a roar from the Magnaflow mufflers booming off the grandstands. By the time I let off the throttle 2.3 seconds later, everyone was on their feet cheering, I rolled it back to the pits and there was already a crowd gathered at my parking spot wanting to know WTF I had in that car. I then popped the hood to let it cool off and started to answer questions.

During the car show the next day there was a steady stream of people saying they saw the car run, one guy said to me "I saw a Marauder pull silently up and thought, this would be awesome if it were a sleeper. When I saw the burnout I could just hear the supercharger and I knew what I was seeing. The surprised look on the people's faces in the stands were priceless." he thanked me for bringing a real sleeper to the show, shook my hand and left. That pretty much made my weekend.

Speak softly and drive a screaming Marauder. Way to represent, thank you!

As much as I enjoy going to car shows, they can really piss me off sometimes. It seems as though unless you own the common fare from GM, Ford or Chrysler you won't fit in and are ignored. Aside from the Marauder, I've always been a fan of beautiful, STOCK, unmolested older Cadillacs, Buicks, Lincolns, Oldsmobiles, etc. Not the stuff you'd really see at your usual car shows, but the sort of cars that a different sort of enthusiasts really dig. Going to most car shows I'll see the same cars, year after year, especially if I go to the same shows. There are a few really great shows that showcase the late model clean cars that I mentioned above, but they're few and far between.

I've never had my Marauder insulted or questioned at a show, but I've only entered it into the local all-Ford show, where it got a fair amount of admiration.

A little off topic, but my Galaxie seems to be getting more attention lately on the street.

I was standing by it the other day talking to a friend. I was parked outside his house in a different town than where I live.

People walking by with their dogs or groceries stopped to look. Even a few driver bys stopped to give it a second look. Got a few "is it for sale?".

Getting a lot of thumbs up lately from drivers going by in the opposite direction.

Must be a sign of old age.

What about your Galaxie? My Dad had a 63-1/2 coupe and a '68 four door sedan when I was a kid (both good, solid cars).

You could say that Marauders by definition come uninvited and stay where they aren't welcome.

I like it! My Dad's 63-1/2 coupe was about that color (to include the top). It was nothing fancy though, had the bench seat and the 289 CI engine.

Nice Galaxie!

Thanks.

Even with the 390/300 and a 3:50 rear, it's not a fast car, but it's pretty responsive for a big boat.

Next Jan, it'll be a 50 year old car that I've owned for 45 years.

Where did the time go?
