Grand marquis and Crown Vic and I believe Town car share the same housing..2003 and up..However the gearing will be different in most cases..2.73 ratio in most, 3.27 and/or 3.55 in CVPI.. Why not just rebuild the one you have? If you can find a CVPI with the 3.55 then it will be just a swap.

i would like to but when the axel broke it broke pieces of the housing off dont want to weld it the way i drive it want last i dont think..1 more thing the grand marquis and some crown vic are not posi me lack of info bought a Mustang GT rear end not knowing that it would fit i was going by the 8.8

So you just need a housing? Alot of the CVPI have trak lock (posi) but and 8.8 is a 8.8 and is the same. Then buy a junkyard housing and switch over the the stuff you have. You can buy axles etc.. just need to get 28 or31 spline based onthe rear you bought

The exact replacement is not a standard Crown Vic or Grand Marq, it has to be a Limo or a Marauder

Limo? not familiar with that..the rear end looks to be the same on the crown vic and grand marquis

Someone else will reply who knows alot more than me..but I'm certain the axles are different due to length...mustang is narrower than cv, marquis marauder. There is no third member really..it part of the axle housing, unless it is a ford 9 inch then it has a thrd member that can be taken out from the front. The gears and the differential should be able to be switched to a cv, marquis hosuing since 8.8 rear. I don;t think this is just as simple as unbolting and re-bolting..someone with rear end and gear set up is recommended for proper ring gear pinion setting, backlash etc.

The replacement axles fit CV/TC/GM/Marauder - 34 3/8" long x 28 spline.
Axle housings all the same for the above cars w/posible exception of limo - haven't found a seperate listing for them.

Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Town Car housings will bolt up.
Gear ratio and tracLoc will be the variables that you will have to change after you get the housing.

Thanks Krytin for adding info..i think the OP wants to know if the 3.55 gear he bought from a mustang will fit/work in a proper housing. I told him it should be the same as any 8.8 but it is not a simple unblot and rebolt procedure. Also the whole housing needs to be 2003 or newer and he needs to buy axle shafts

the mustag housing is no good for you..too narrow etc..the differential and ring and pinon should be ok..it will need swapped to the crown vic, marquis or marauder housing along with new axle shafts. what year mustang from? The only true bolt up option is finding a marauder or cvpi with 3.55 ratio installed still. other wise a shop will need to be involoved to set it up and at that point might as well rebuild the trak lock and do bearings etc..i saw a marauder axle housing complete in TX for $750 with 137,000 miles on car-part.com...other housings from cv or marquis are gonna run $200 to $500 plus the shop rate to switch it over to 3.55 and rebuild it..anywheer from $200 to $500 I am guessing.

my $.02

1) look for marauders being parted out. Get one with low miles or don't bother.

2) a. Buy a low mile rear from a late model wreck, TC/GM/VIC. Buy new gears bearings and posi carrier. This might be $500 plus the rear. Ford Racing parts. You can get the 31 spline carrier if you get a late model rear. If you spend extra time looking you may be able to find one with a posi carrier already installed and save $200.

2) b. How much can you do yourself? If you can install the housing then you just need a shop to setup the gears. The car should be drivable after the rear is swapped though the speedo and probably performance will be wrong, and no posi until the new gears are installed (unless you got one with posi.)

This is my suggestion for the long term. Low mile axles, plus all new gears and bearings.

Important notes:

I know the brakes are all the same 03 and up.

I THINK (VERIFY) that the housings are all the same.

I THINK 05 or 06 is the change year to the 31 spline.

Also the rear in the Marauder is a "K" code. That means 3.55 Posi. They would be somewhat hard to find but if you found one low miles then the gears are already correct.

Just buy the way, some folks would take the opportunity to put a numerically higher gear in at this time to make the car quicker.
