I will probably be buying a remanufactured/rebuilt transmission this week to solve my trans problem. I just want to verify a few things first based on having a 2003 300A Marauder...
1) I should be getting a 4R70W transmission for the 4.6L/5.4L V-8
2) If the one I get was for a Mustang instead of a MM/Crown Vic/GM, the difference will be the tail piece, which I should be able to swap between transmissions without difficulty, as the bell housing and the rest of the trans will be the same
If any of this is in error, please correct me. I've found some conflicting information and it's made this whole ordeal somewhat trying.

I'm hearing from a transmission rebuilder/retailer and the guys that did my previous rebuild that the trans in my car is the 4R75W, not the 4R70W. I really need to verify what the hell I'm looking for here. There's so much contradictory information.

Both would work.
The later 4R75W had some minor improvements over the 4R7pW.

You cannot use a trans with the improper tail shaft. If you want to change the tail shaft you also need to change the output shaft and that requires the whole trans needs to be torn down as it is the first piece to be put in upon a build.
Also get the one from the same year... Cause there is a different amount of teeth on the speed sensor. If you get the wrong one it will either shift really quickly or not at all untill you are taching the engine out to hit the shift point speed. This can be taken care with a tune tho.

It's looking like I'll be going with a rebuild by someone who knows a hell of a lot more about transmissions than I do. But thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of that bit regarding the tail piece. It seemed much more simplistic. Good thing I haven't done anything yet.
