Has anyone done anything different with the MM grill, other than just removing the badges? I was thinking something like the CV Honeycomb in their Street Appearance Package. Thanks...

I have the center caps inside of the logo on my badges, but as far as using the honycomb grills, zack was looking into using them, but the grill for a cv is not the same as ours. So that wont fit directly to ours.

Dennis R. and Paul had a REAL nice steel mesh grill on their SEMA car, and told us at the time that it would be produced. However, we've still not seen any updates on the project. Dennis??

I was just at Pauls High Performance today and looked closely at his grill.
I can duplicate it with no problem.
I should have 1 or 2 with me at Indy.

That's what I wanted to hear. Now the big question: What do you need to do it, and how much is gonna cost me?

I have what I need to do it.
You dont want to know what it will cost you.
It will be more than a badgeless grill, which is about 365 when its all said and done.

Thanks...I had already read about Zack, but I was really wanting the look of the CV honeycomb. It's part of the intimidation I'm after. I would love to marry the cool lines of the Marauder with the nose of the Vic. I even thought about replacing the nose piece completely, but it meant losing the fog lights...too high a price. From what I've read, the left lane hogs aren't as scared of the Mercury emblem as they are of the Blue Oval. I don't care what they think, as long as they MOVE OVER!
I'm really anxious to see what Zack does with the Honeycomb. I assume it will be powdercoated black?

Finding honeycomb material in sheet form is next to impossible.
If anyone can find me a link to the site where it is sold, Id be willing to entertain making one.

I'm with jeroger1 . . .

I would LOVE a CVPI-style honeycomb grille. I really much prefer it visually over the GM/Marauder vertical bars. Zack--the Paul-style mesh grille looks VERY nice in that photo--wonder how it would look in black? Would I be able to get the Paul-style mesh grille from you in black at a reasonable price? If we can't find any honeycomb-like material for you to use, that may be just the ticket . . . Thanks!

I just looked up the material Paul used.
Its available so I might pick some up in the next few weeks.
It is no easy task to prep the grill shell. The bars must be cut out, then all of the humps left behind must be ground off, sanded smooth and be filled where imperfections are.
Then the material must be cut to size, notched out to clear the upper and lower mounting points, then adhered to the grill.
Then it must be painted.
Ill have some grills to bring to MVII
The biggest expense is the material: The grill pictured a few posts above is Stainless Steel. If it is subjected to a rock chip in the rain, it will rust immediately if it were plain carbon steel. I will not powdercoat it for the simple fact of potential chipping and not being able to touch it up with an exact color. I feel paint and clearcoat is the best choice.

Zack, do you have a source for that stainless mesh? I've been wanting to try something like that myself for several months ago, but couldn't find the material.

Hey NBCShooter, I can make the Paul style grill but just realized it cant be painted (It can but is not ideal) because it is a woven mesh design, which means the wire is always able to move from side to side and up and down.
It will scrape the paint off when you wash the grill.

Just a point. The "CVPI" honeycomb grille isn't from the "street appearance package" That package uses the standard CV chrome grille.
The "honeycomb" grille as used on CVPIs isn't special. It's also used on Taxi package CVs. As with the Baby center cap style hub caps, also used on Taxis (dog dish, taxi caps, etc), these items are used because they are cheap, not special.

I stand corrected. I have been misled by eBay ads and used Interceptor dealers.

According to Fords info:

Thanks for the enlightenment. I've been calling it the wrong thing. I'm still looking for plastic honeycomb, none the less. I've already ordered a new MM Grill, and will be checking different options. Pictures will be forthcoming.

I saw a CV LX today. It had custom 18 or 20" wheels, that looked quite good, also had a custom grille (in chrome) the surround was typical stock CV, but the insert was made of many fine horizontal bars. (about the width of the vertical bars of the MM grille) These bars were not just flat, but perfectly shaped within the surround. Looked good, but as he was driving I didn't get to ask about it.
There is a Ford F150 grille that has similar fine horizontal bars.

I have noticed a few of these horizontal grilles especially on the CVPI cars. Every grille I look at on a crown vic looks like it will fit an MM. I have searched the threads and have not found what the difference is, just a couple of "they're different" Whats different?

stevengerard:

Good question, stevengerard--I've been really wondering that myself, because I'm a huge fan of the CVPI honeycomb grille as well. I believe that the honeycomb grille really widens the stance of the car, making it look lower and meaner--compare the side-by-side pics in my gallery of the Marauder-V10 CVPI pics as shown here: (http://www.mercurygallery.net/mmnet/showphoto.php/photo/853/size/big/password/0/sort/1/cat/500)

Zack:

Zack, I know you're busy with your other MM projects, but before I commit to ordering your "standard" badgeless grille (which I really like also), would it be stupid to simply just order a honeycomb CV grille and see if there's any possibility of re-fitting the insert to the Marauder grille frame? Or have you already studied the two grilles side-by-side and determined that it's simply not doable? Thanks.

Zack, You had better not be making copies of my "custom" grill. You told me I'd be a one and only... The grill posted by Zack is the one he made for me. I stop and look at it everyday. Te work is OE quality or better. I an looking forward to seeing his next creation.

Take Care

Fin -

I'm not doing my grille, but my guess is you'll be a "one and only" as long as no one else sees it. :)

Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Thanks,

Nice pic! I wonder if it is the horizontal Ford emblem vs the round Merc emblem. interesting as the black wheels help lower the car as well. I also think the black trim around the doors looks nice. Though our chrome on the MM makes the car look higher end. I'm going in today to get the spoiler put on, I think I'm going to have them take off the rear emblem.
