Actually, we get the car scene we have today BECAUSE it's now considered wrong to judge and anything goes.

Some things are just wrong, some ideas are just stupid. You don't have to hate a person because they came up with something wrong or stupid, but it spreads like cancer when stupidity itself is allowed to fester instead of saying "well dude, kudos on the hard work, but the final product just isn't really working. Try a new direction."

Even if you discount the idea that some trends and styles are just stupid, there are people that still can't even do them right. Is that ok too? I mean, sure, it may only seem silly to put a garish widebody kit on a car, but when you can't even be bothered to paint it properly, how is that just not plain stupid and/or lazy?

If you aren't even allowed to have the opinion that some forms of modification are bad ideas, then I suppose they need to give everyone participation trophies at car shows, because everyone's a winner at that point even if they don't really deserve it...



Now I know I've said it before, but it really is just my favorite thing ever when people talk about haters. "haters gonna hate." Well, I think maybe the "haters" figured out something a long time ago that you are too stupid to get if the "haters" far outnumber your supporters. And no, disliking something doesn't mean they are jealous, sometimes it really just means they think you are a moron. I can't stand the car scene because this "haters gonna hate" mentality is so prevalent, and consequently I've stopped going to shows and my enthusiasm in the car hobby has in no way been negatively impacted, but in fact rather improved in some areas (for instance, no longer having to face palm every five seconds because some dumbass newbie talks about something of which they have no clue about.)


tl;dr: Really, sometimes you have to put your foot down on things and be outright and say "sorry man, it just isn't any good."

Some things are just wrong, some ideas are just stupid. You don't have to hate a person because they came up with something wrong or stupid, but it spreads like cancer when stupidity itself is allowed to fester instead of saying "well dude, kudos on the hard work, but the final product just isn't really working. Try a new direction."

Even if you discount the idea that some trends and styles are just stupid, there are people that still can't even do them right. Is that ok too? I mean, sure, it may only seem silly to put a garish widebody kit on a car, but when you can't even be bothered to paint it properly, how is that just not plain stupid and/or lazy?

If you aren't even allowed to have the opinion that some forms of modification are bad ideas, then I suppose they need to give everyone participation trophies at car shows, because everyone's a winner at that point even if they don't really deserve it...



Now I know I've said it before, but it really is just my favorite thing ever when people talk about haters. "haters gonna hate." Well, I think maybe the "haters" figured out something a long time ago that you are too stupid to get if the "haters" far outnumber your supporters. And no, disliking something doesn't mean they are jealous, sometimes it really just means they think you are a moron. I can't stand the car scene because this "haters gonna hate" mentality is so prevalent, and consequently I've stopped going to shows and my enthusiasm in the car hobby has in no way been negatively impacted, but in fact rather improved in some areas (for instance, no longer having to face palm every five seconds because some dumbass newbie talks about something of which they have no clue about.)


tl;dr: Really, sometimes you have to put your foot down on things and be outright and say "sorry man, it just isn't any good."

LOL, I see, you assume that I express my dislike of these fads and trends because you think it elevates my own self esteem to put down others.

Here's the problem with that thought:

I feel pride based on accomplishments, not on actions alone. I express my dislike of these silly car trends because they typically possess no positive function (and in fact sometimes detract from the usefulness of the car), and beyond that are an eyesore. It's quite clear that I'm not a minority in thinking these cars are eyesores. Just because someone could tape or glue this **** on their car doesn't make it an achievement.

This work people do on their cars is no different than any other medium of art; if you create it and you display it in the public forum, it is open to criticism.

So no, I don't have a "proud smile" while I say these cars are creative disasters. I hang my head in shame at the thought that to say I am a "car guy" to others might end up with me being lumped in with these people with poor taste and sometimes no skills to even execute their poor taste properly.

If you can come up with a better reason why not blunting the truth about these vehicles is wrong other than "hurt feelings," I'd be glad to hear it.

The only truth to your statement is how these "performance" parts can actually slow the car down... that's a truthful statement. Something not looking good is only your opinion. The owner didn't make the car for you, they made it for themselves. Yet you are saying it's an eye soar and that's the truth? No, it isn't. They like it. Does it look good? Depends on who you ask. There isn't right or wrong to if it looks good or bad... now does it work? Big wings on the back, huge mufflers on a stock engine.... does it work? Most of the time no. Truth. Does it look horrible? That's subjective.

If you think there is such thing as a right or wrong opinion, you should run for office.

I don't have the kind of money to do an all-out build on my Camaro, and so I'm not gonna attempt to half-ass throw things together in the mean time, I'm gonna wait until it can be afforded to attempt it if I ever decide to attempt it. I get that many young people don't understand this concept, but that's all the more reason to NOT blunt the truth about their poor decision.

Actually you are wrong on politics. That's why there are different parties. You vote for one side depending who's opinion you feel is right. Do you think it's right for same sex marriage? No right or wrong, but different people will tell you if it's right or wrong, good or bad. That's just one subject. Hybrid cars for the masses is better than gas guzzlers? Good or bad? Depends who you ask.

Most people will not take the time to do things the right way when it comes time to modifications. They would rather spend $500 at Pepboys then save up more and order through JEGS. Could you blame them? Most young drivers want to go out and enjoy their stuff now and not have to wait a year to save up and do it right. Could the mechanical aspect be wrong? Yes, but this whole thread was started on cheap cosmetics that you and others look down upon and say it's "horrible."

Appearance and functionality are two different subjects, you keep throwing them into the same.

Show cars that are never driven with mirrors under the chassis are not functional, yet they win awards. Little cheap cars that are driven, but look "horrible" are looked down upon... even if it still maintains the purpose of transportation?

If everyone waited for the ability to afford modifying their vehicles to their dream spec done absolutely professionally by top mechanics, 90% of Marauders would still be completely stock. I think you've confused the theory behind our political system and the reality of what politicians have made it. However, I think we can probably both agree that this little side-excursion has outlived its usefulness in this discussion.

Why do you think there are awards, for anything? And why do you think there are different awards for different things? No consumer organization would award a survivor '70 Chevelle 454 SS with the title of "most fuel efficient" or "most reliable daily driver" in this day and age, just the same as no one would award a brand new Toyota Corolla with the title of "sports car of the year." Show cars are awarded SPECIFICALLY for their appearance. I'm not saying a primered Civic can't be reliable, but I will say it looks cheap and if done on purpose is completely stupid. Some aspects of visual modification DO affect functionality; a great case is the stance fad right now. When your car sits so low that it scrapes on even mildly uneven road, and your camber is so negative that the outer sidewall of your tire never sees ANY wear, it's functionally messed up.

There's also a really good chance when you do things half-assed they will cost you two or three times as much in the long run to do it right, plus when your car is broken down because you cheaped out, you're seriously not enjoying it...


Even with music, there are styles of music and themes/ideas within music that were tried and are not used any more. Why do you suppose that is?

If you can never criticize something, you can never assess what value it has, and you end up handicapping your growth in that thing, possibly to the point of complete stagnation.

Personally, I don't have any problem with clean, nicely modified Japanese cars. (tuner cars)
It's not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the planning, hard work, time and money spent on modding any car.
It's just that those types of Japanese cars are so few and far between.
A vast majority are clap trap POS Civics and Accords with annoyingly LOUD, horrible sounding fart pipes, crappy primered, cracked and damaged body kits and the ubiquitous 747 bi-level wing! (Ricer Retards)

I think it's because many people that want to modify cars lack perspective and the ability to define an end-goal. A big secondary reason, at least here in most of America, is that people take small-engined import cars and build them using (a very limited form of) dragster build logic.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people still think American cars = go straight, Japanese cars = turn corners. Those people UNIFORMLY have little to no experience driving at the limit. I've shut up more than one import owner in my Camaro when it comes to handling, and my favorite was a BMW owner.

Yeah, but did you look at the dyno curve?

The thing doesn't wake up and make serious horsepower until almost 6,000 RPM and it's all done by 8,000 rpm.
Kinda like a roman candle....once you 'light it' off it goes crazy....but it's a dud otherwise.
I'll take a thumpin' V8 with a torque curve that starts at 2,500 rpm and is flat as a table until 6,500 rpm.
Torque, especially down low in the rpm range, is what plants you in the seat and makes you go.....:burn:... :eek:

I think you've confused the theory behind our political system and the reality of what politicians have made it. However, I think we can probably both agree that this little side-excursion has outlived its usefulness in this discussion.

Why do you think there are awards, for anything? And why do you think there are different awards for different things? No consumer organization would award a survivor '70 Chevelle 454 SS with the title of "most fuel efficient" or "most reliable daily driver" in this day and age, just the same as no one would award a brand new Toyota Corolla with the title of "sports car of the year." Show cars are awarded SPECIFICALLY for their appearance. I'm not saying a primered Civic can't be reliable, but I will say it looks cheap and if done on purpose is completely stupid. Some aspects of visual modification DO affect functionality; a great case is the stance fad right now. When your car sits so low that it scrapes on even mildly uneven road, and your camber is so negative that the outer sidewall of your tire never sees ANY wear, it's functionally messed up.

There's also a really good chance when you do things half-assed they will cost you two or three times as much in the long run to do it right, plus when your car is broken down because you cheaped out, you're seriously not enjoying it...


Even with music, there are styles of music and themes/ideas within music that were tried and are not used any more. Why do you suppose that is?

If you can never criticize something, you can never assess what value it has, and you end up handicapping your growth in that thing, possibly to the point of complete stagnation.

Awards for car of the year are made for the general public so they won't have to do the research for a car best suited for them. Those things don't mean diddley. Marauder was never 2003 car of the year, yet it satisfied me and to this day there is nothing else I want.

Awards at car shows are given for the shiniest, low mile never driven cars in the whole show. I personally have lost all respect for owners that have beyond perfect cars. Going to car shows can still be fun, but you must pick out the ones that best suit you. $20 for an entry to see a 55 Bel Air on jack stands? No thanks. Free entry and see people zip tying their cars to get home because they drove them there? Count me in. Rat Rod concepts are cool to me too, but the people are such douchbags I quit going. Old American Iron and Rockabilly are my thing, but them not wanting to speak to you because you don't have grease in your hair or wear a Sun Records shirt everyday? Pleaseeeee.

Finally, music comes and goes by interests of the general public. We both know what's popular now compared to 20 years ago is a lot different and it will be in another 20 years and less than that too. Styles of POP music and cars change depending on what's going on in the world. In the 60s we had anti-war songs and huge cars. 1973 comes around and now everyone wants a car with four less cylinders. Did the public quit buying muscle cars because they were "horrible"? No. It was because of the gas crunch and in the end it was due to the existence of religion.

We can go back and forth on this all you want, but I think I'm done here.

civilized?? there are two ricer clubs in springfield, ma. they are rival's, they like to vandalize their rival's cars. one kid approached a rival member to try to get reimbursed for a sticker on his car that was torn off and burned and was shot to death!! ....the sticker that was torn off was the car club's sticker, the rival's on both sides video the burning of them and post it on facebook, sad but true

The Marauder wasn't car of the year because it didn't really do any particular thing in an excellent way, aside from being the last big car with a V8 that could give you the feel of a car from 50 years ago. In the marketplace, (unfortunately for us) that holds little value. It did a lot of things well, but nothing really excellent. If they would've been factory supercharged, I imagine it'd be a whole different ball game, but that's a moot point by now...

At the root of it all, you're a hypocrite. You have no respect for those that choose to have their cars maintained in a like-new state, yet you expect us to respect those that mod their cars like crazy, most of the time doing it wrong and ending up with the buckets that are posted in this thread.

I will have to agree with you about car meets in general though, I stopped going because A: Car meets only show you what every car can do exactly the same, which is park, and B: despite what they might try to say to the contrary, it's a dick-measuring contest for pretty much anyone out there that didn't roll out there with you as a friend. Count your blessings if you live in a place where car meets aren't like this, 'cause even the good car meet in San Antonio gets pretty *****y pretty quick.

You still didn't really get the point I was making about the metrics by which quality is measured. In a straightforward way, those that are "in the know," know what's up. Real musicians know that there is little to no substance behind modern pop music (personally, I think of it more as [weak]poetry with light musical backing rather than proper music), and car people that aren't 16 and have had and modded cars for longer than six months know that these kind of modifications are stupid. It's just a kicker in this case when even people that aren't a part of the scene can see it for what it is too.
