I was there in 1976. Hurricane sidewiped us. Floods and light damage. Good time. Other than that, don't remember much....
August 10, 1976 – Prior to the arrival of Hurricane Belle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Belle) from the south, 250,000 evacuate from the shore during the peak of the tourist season. While paralleling the coast just offshore, it causes winds of 65 mph (105 km/h) and gusts of up to 90 mph (145 km/h), along with a maximum rainfall total of 3.93 inches (9.98 cm) in Cape May Court House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_May_Court_House,_New_Jers ey). In addition, the hurricane causes a storm surge of 8.85 feet (2.70 m) in Atlantic City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_City,_New_Jersey). However, damage is less than expected, and no deaths occur.

Congress Hall is nice. It was Abraham Lincoln's favorite place to stay.
The zoo is cool. Also, climb the lighthouse.
Nice to take the ferry from Lewes.

There are some nice B&Bs in Victorian houses if you like that kind of thing. Make sure you get reservations for dinner because the town is VERY touristy and crowded in summer. We ended up eating at 10 pm one night with our 11 year old neice in tow. Not a good thing! I am not a huge fan of the place mainly because of the crowds and all those knick-knack shops. But for a weekend it should be OK. The light house is pretty cool.

Depends 100% on what you want to spend.
Cape May is known for it's romantic Victorian Bed & Breakfast inns, and many of the nicest are on Jackson St. They are expensive during the summer season IMO but you can't go wrong - they are all great, and you are right in the middle of everything. The lady will love it. Several of them are managed through the Virginia Hotel, which is much larger and is also on Jackson St.
Try brunch at The Mad Batter or Uncle Bill's Pancake House, right around the corner.
There are also the huge, original Victorian resort hotels facing the ocean, like The Inn of Cape May, Angel of the Sea, Congress Hall (mentioned above) and several others.
These are major tourist attractions, and you'll pay for that - however, they try hard to live up to their status and, again, you really can't go wrong with any of them. The lady will swoon when you pull up to the place. Be aware of the exact room you're getting, because some of them are tiny for the price.
Of these, I'd recommend Congress Hall. It is immaculately maintained, has the least amount of hokey gingerbread-y stuff and has a few nice dining rooms. Who am I to argue with Lincoln ? ;)
There are also many places in between the tiny B&B's and the Grand Hotels. I was at a wedding at the Hotel Macomber recently, and the place was beautiful.
Personally, if it's not a special occasion like an anniversary or something, I like the Jersey Cape Motel. It's not downtown and it's not fancy, but they have reasonable rates and it's only about fifteen minutes away from everything. They have barbeque grills you can use, and a nice little pool.

I go to Wildwood Crest twice per year, vacation (August) and old car autoshow (late September). I've been going there for about 30 years.
The Crest is only ten minutes north from Cape May.
Take a walk on the Wildwood Boardwalk. About 1.5 miles long. Rides, amusemant piers, games, etc. Dwarfs the Cape May Boardwalk.
Dinner, I go to the Lobster House, Cape May. It's a typical seashore eating place, not five star, but decent. And, you can put your name in for a table, take a walk along the pier in the back, grab a drink on a docked schooner (or eat at less costly places on the pier), and then go inside for a decent dinner.
A good place in Wildwood for dinner is Beach Creek. It's on the bay, not the ocean, but, again, you put your name in for a table, and then go sit out back and have a drink.
With the sun setting, it can be very nice.
North Wildwood is less touristy, and has a few decent Italian places to eat.

We stayed at Marquis de Lafayette. It was small and served the purpose. Uncle Bills Pancake house is a must! Cash only, be warned, great breakfast though.

Yeah, it is tough to beat the Jersey Shore.
I've been fortunate enough to have had a job which required a LOT of business travel, mostly in the USA. (Now that I'm retired, I kind of miss the travel.)
I've been to some very nice shore spots, but, you don't find too many places like the Jersey Shore.
That being said, there are a bunch of really great places to visit here in the good old US of A.
Must hit the Ugly Mug, great suds, good bar food! We usually go there when I take the boat down that way.
My place is short drive up the parkway in Sea Isle (EXIT17). If you are up my way make sure check out the Poor House Awesome food, whiskey, and suds! Couple others are the OD and Springfield for good music and dance. Plenty of shops for the ladies great beaches too.
