The buttons on my steering wheel are tacky. Can I just remove the soft touch paint from the button and have them plain plastic. Anyone try this on an old set of buttons. I've used mineral spirits to remove it from other things with success.

All of mine are tacky too. I have not heard of any fix for it other than replace them.

You need to quit eating jelly do nuts while driving. No fix.

I sprayed mine with windex, it seemed to have fixed the problem

Yeah, it's a problem for me too.

Same issue for me too.

I applied some leather conditioner & it helped to
rid the tacky buttons for a little while but soon
came back.

I learned to live with it.

Would be wonderful if someone on the site had
a permanent solution.

I was going to replace mine about 5 years ago but before I did I used plain ole lighter fluid soaked rag and the GUNK came off with a little work!!

They look like new and the white print on them was not disturbed......give it a whirl boys!!

Does that mean you removed the soft touch coating? So they are just black plastic underneath the soft touch? That would be great!

I don't know what you mean by "soft touch coating"......mine were always black plastic until they got gummy!!

It takes some work but the goo will come off leaving them like new!!

Mine are gunky too. I used a Windex wipe a while back and it helped for a little bit, but the problem came right back. Yuck.

A fine mist of clear coat might do the trick. Careful not too much.

What marauderjack said, naphtha works great as a cleaner, gets bubble gum out of clothes too. Zippo fluid for a little, or buy coleman camp fuel for a lot.

The actual plastic finish comes off the buttons leaving a tacky substrate.
