buying advice on 2010 F150

looking to purchase a 2010 F150, FX2. it has the 4.6l, 3 valve motor. 2wd, hence the FX2. 35,000 miles on it and it has been routinely cared for.

Are there any known issues with this truck/motor/transmission? I know the blocks are the same as the mm, but not sure how much more has been changed than what's on our cars. thanks.

jeffonebuck: doesn't the mm engine suffer from cyl8 overheating? would that be the same as saying that "heads overheating" in that article?

Spark plug breakage is an issue with these, but early replacement definitely helps. F-150's with the 4.6 seem a bit underpowered. I'd opt for a 5.4 if possible. Have you test driven it yet?

fordmike: I have test driven it, Im weary of the 5.4 because ive heard at around 100k they have something that wears out and makes them sound like diesels on start up.idk? the spark plug breakage thing.....please explain! thanks

I just bought a '10 F150 SWB with a 4.6, better gas mileage than my 12 Ecoboost for sure.
Change the plugs early, do regular service with quality product, enjoy!

OEM plugs are welded and like to break off in the head.

Your right they both have flow problems, I think they are good engines but not a engine to push for more HP. I wouldn't pass the truck up on it being a 3V if it's going to be a DD and routine maintenance has been done in the past.

ok, I just read up on the 3v spark plug breakage, the new style plugs that they used are junk, however, are the replacement plugs the same welded ones that are used in production of the motor? ive also read this

"Affected engine build dates are as follows: 5.4L 3V and 6.8L 3V before Oct. 9, 2007, 4.6L 3V before Nov. 30, 2007. The engine build date can be read on the left-hand cam cover information sticker. "

since this truck is a 2010, the build date is likely in 2009, could a motor from 2 years earlier have been assembled in this truck? I think highly unlikely, but was the problem really solved with the newer motors, or are they still a problem? thanks again guys, I knew you guys could give me the advice I was looking for.

Had a customer who had an 06 I believe. I teased him that it was a diesel but he had 200k on it when he traded it in. Never had in issue, dealer told him it was normal :dunno:
