View Full Version : Tunes, trans shifting and a couple other q's

When I bought my Marauder several months ago, I was told there was a tune in it. But, after being a member on MM.net, I sometimes wonder about the "tune" it has (if at all). But, since my speedo with the gears is within one MPH of being correct, no check engine light, pretty hard 1st to 2nd shift (usually will chirp/spin the tires with moderate acceleration and a shift point as low as ~3200 rpm) and overall decent performance, wouldn't that suggest a "tune"?
I have watched countless Marauder video's ;) where a lot of cars that have tunes under acceleration DO NOT spin the tires on the 1st to second shifts. Also, on deceleration, I can feel the car downshifting when slowing down to a light or stop.
What would getting a new tune and a tuner do for me (if anything)?

Although I do not have one..it kinda sounds like you have a J-mod on your trans. maybe someone who does will know based on your description. I know taking out the 1-2 accumulator springs makes the shift pretty sharp

I have read about the J-Mod. Usually, I don't mind the crisp 1-2 shifts. They let people know this ain't no ordinary panther! It's a Marauder!:D

I picked up a nice used Xcal2 here and hit up Marty (Mo's) for a tune. Couldn't be happier. No need for a jmod. Shifts nice & firm, winds up nice. Highly recommended

I REALLY want to get to Marty-o's shop to purchase a better tuner,as Marauders are a rare thing in this area...Keep us posted as to which way you go....

We are ready when you are!

I had the same issue...But previous owner provided me with the "Superchips" handheld that he "Tuned" with.

After restoring to "Stock"...I re-did with same tuner, turning down shift pressures to eliminate a "Bounce" in the 3-4 shift.

What do you mean "Bounce"?

Glad you are happy Mike!

Thanks again Marty! Forgot to let you know how it worked out. It's like a whole new car. Such a pleasure to drive now. Haven't driven my other cars even once since installing your tune. Maybe the tune wasn't such a good idea...racking up the miles on the Marauder!:burn:

There's no other way to accurately describe what the trans was doing....FIRM 1-2 , 2-3 , Bouncy3-4...then TC lockup.

You could feel/hear a bounce whenever driven "normally" (Yes ,open to interpetation):)

As I have a "higher mile" chassis I tend to be a little lighter on the gas petal than
some of the other members here (possibly):P

Dropping the shift pressures back from "wide open" a few notches with the handheld completely cured the "bounce"...Still going to upgrade as soon as I can get lost over Ga. way...:burnout:

My 3-4 shift under med/hard acceleration is fine. Light acceleration it seems that the 2-3 shift is fine but the 3rd torque converter lockup is a bit weird under light acceleration. Once the 3rd TC is locked, then the shift to 4th is fine as is the TC lockup in 4th. Doesn't feel like anything is wrong with the TC or trans, just maybe a program issue.

I went as far as taking her to a transmission shop...just didn't fall for the "Lets dissassemble and find your problem" routine...

Perhaps you could contact the previous owner & ask what tune(er) he used...I know I'm glad that I was careful...the rebuilds will come too soon anyway....Good Luck!
