For those with the chip (or flash) to firm shift points, especially witht he 4.10 gears or taller, we all know the good old chirp the MM can give us under hard acceleration from the 1 to 2 shift.

What I'm wondering, is under not so WOT, the tires do not chirp, and the shift is super firm, and my neck snaps back. Is my neck the only thing absorbing the increased load? What kind of deteriorating effect does this cause to the transmission..is this what leads to broken stuff that Dennis talks about in his tranny upgrade posts? what (besides my neck) really absorbs the firm shifts?

I used to think that the hard shifts tax the durability of the transmission too, but from what I've been told, the higher fluid pressures of the transmission is what causes the harder shifts, and that these higher pressures actually preserve the transmission too.

But someone feel free to correct me on that if it isn't true.

And we'll eventually find the next weak link and beef it up too!

The added snap may shorten the life of the universal joint, but as previously stated, a firmer shift is usually easier on the trans.

I'll tell you this...Nobody...and I mean NOBODY has a firmer shift than Barry (Greyghost)..."neck snap" doesn't even do his shifts justice...

Your gonna have to look into gettin a Hanns device to save your neck if it's that bad.
Any hard shifts won't do the trans any harm but may make the u-joints wear faster.

I drove it too. It shifts super hard, if you have any power at all to the ground it will chirp the tires every time on a 1-2 shift, If you're not into the throttle it still bangs into 2nd really really hard.

He had the shifting firmed up with the chip/pcm programming which increases the shifting pressures (I believe that's part of what it does anyway) and then he got the DR Level II upgrade with a performance torque converter (not a Stallion but something similar) without changing the programming.

The next step is to soften it up a bit with the program, but Barry has found a work-around for now. If you don't want to really get on it like everyday around town driving, just start out in 2nd then when it gets moving put it in drive and let it shift up from there.

I've studied this a bit 'cause mine is in the shop now to have the same thing done. So I'll have to get reprogrammed again soon too.

And a OH BTW --Ms. M . has to carry a "neck pillow" with her in # 7 whenever we go anywhere now---it's a " U" shaped pillow for her neck--she missed using it in Raleigh a couple weeks ago following some other MM'er's and realy felt the diff for a couple of weeks--told me to ease up a bit and to let her know when it was that "time" again (to put head against back rest) or else!!.....ok ..so I'm still learning....SARGE..What can I do....it's difficult to give advance warning when foot may/will hit the floor---what to do?????? :baaa:
