View Full Version : The New FL Home for My MM is Coming Together

We have been off of the MM grid for awhile, and below is the reason why.
We just go back from 3 weeks of being down in Florida and on a week long Christmas cruise to the western Caribbean. Enclosed are some shots of our house under construction in Ocklawaha (Lake Weir) Florida.
We also have sign of some "PETS" in the yard already, pics enclosed.
The roof alone, took 8,000 sq ft of shingles
We're targeting a mid-March turn-key.

Perfect! A garage with a house attached.

Actually, the living space is 100 sq ft more than the garage space. The total garage space (including the RV garage...with full hook-ups) is 2500 sq ft.
The RV garage floor is reenforced to handle a 16,600 RV load. We will also have a reenforce concrete pad on the outside of the RV garage with hook-ups for visiting friends with RVs.
There is another house going up with a big garage environment, where they have reenforced one part of the garage floor to handle a car lift.
Here is an update video (by the developer) on the house with the lift:

The RV garage is 45'x16', with a 14' garage door. We'll be able to have the slides out on the 5th wheel for loading and check-out before we depart on a trip. With the full hook-ups (50amp power, water, sewer, cable), we will be able to have it up and running inside and use it as an overflow apartment if we ever need to.

Well, we'll be selling a custom built brick home here on 3 acres. But we have had enough of those YEAH WHO's in Annapolis and all the added taxes and firearm restrictions this year. The Rain Tax for one.
The contractor that's building our house has been family owned since 1871 and up until now, has been building $1.5+ million dollar homes and upper end commercial buildings. He decided that he wanted to diversify a little had have some fun building $100,000-$500,000 homes, and bring some of his upper end professionalism into this market. We have been TOTALLY impressed with him so far.
Also after the next few months of winter here, I'll be done shoveling snow.
And no FL state income tax....
The enclosed picture is a sample of the daily December sunset at our local adult beverage establishment, about a 1/2 mile from the house.
Need I go on.

Very nice!! Love the setup! There is not much I can complain about since we moved down here from the DC area almost 10 years ago. I love Florida! :cloud9: Maybe we will meet up at some of the Sunshine State Marauder meets!

For informational and research only. If anybody is considering retiring to FL, you might want to check this place out. They have advertised in Harley Davidson's HOG magazine, and Hot Rod and Moterhome Magazines also. They state that they are "Baby Boomer Toy Friendly": www.lakeweirliving.com (http://www.lakeweirliving.com)
You can check the contractor out at this site:

Just looked at your sig. It looks like the only thing you are missing is a boat and a pair of jet skies! ;) You could probably get some good deal on that stuff up in your area this time of year! :P

Yeah, we'll tackle the boat issue once we get down there. Trying to decide do we want a bass boat or a bay boat.

From what I have learned from several years working at a boat dealership here, if you are planning on doing some saltwater fishing AND freshwater fishing, I would go the bay boat route. If you are going to stay strickly freshwater, than I would go the bass boat route.
Be sure to check out Key West Boats too. They have a quality bay boat with a great resale value and a good price (plus, I know the owner of the local dealer too).

Nope, we're about a 1/2 mile from the lake. Back in the 80s I tried to buy house in Waldorf, MD on Jay Bird Court :)

Everything looks like it's coming together down yonder. Have one thought though as far as boats go. Boats are like cars and there is no substitute for cubic inches. Note the Marauder tie-in ;)

Bay boat, if you have any plans of fishing in saltwater go with the bay boat.
Don't rule out the used market.
Look at Black Jack
Sea Hunter
Lake & Bay
Although the Blue Wave looks nice too.
Look at thehulltruthdotcom for info on your purchase before pulling the trigger.

Including the RV garage, we could probably stash 9-10 MMs in there.
An in-ground screened-in solar heated pool is scheduled within the next couple of weeks as part of the plan.

I didn't think people still built houses with cinderblocks they seem not to like that way now a days, Im guessing reason because it's more expensive?, Garage looks like a dream by the way

Marion County Building code dictates the block. For that area of Florida the house needs to be able to sustain a 140 mph wind. Every 16" (I believe) there is re-bar and concrete in the wall, connected to anchor points in the foundation. And then the roof trusses are tied to the re-bar.

Are you in a flood zone? Flood insurance here in SC took a huge jump for folks closer to the ocean. Thats a fortress, not a house. Lookin good!

Technically, they haven't for 50 years. Those are cement blocks, no cinder in them. :P
Why did you use block instead of a poured concrete set-up, at least for the living quarters part of the house? : dunno:

Eric, I asked the builder your question. He said that the cost of poured concrete vice concrete block and the pros and cons between both is overkill. He builds commercial building up to 3 stories high with block.

With the drywall completed last week, the builder called and stated he can now give a target date for house completion. With drywall complete he gave us a date of 28MAY.
Here is an illustrated shot of what the house is going to look like, though the roof will be a light brown/tan in color.
