View Full Version : Double dual exhaust?

So I'm sitting here for what must be hours poking through YouTube clips of MM exhaust notes. Everyone of them has that annoying (to me) exhaust brap sound once under throttle. Most of the cars in the clips sound good at idle.

So I'm wondering what two short mufflers on each side might sound like. Has anyone tried this or ever heard or know a guy that has tried this on any type of performance car? I remember the old Volvos came with what we called front mufflers and can style rear resonators, not that old Volvos were loud but the theory of two muffler style cans has been done.

I was thinking what would two Flowmaster 10's (or similar style mufflers) in series sound like. Just trying so far unsuccessfully to find a system with no brap. :)

I did this before I installed my mufflers and thought the same thing. Not a big fan or the "stainless sound" as I call it, I hear it mostly on GM's...but quads out the back sounds like a nice idea, and not just fake quad tips...

For me I think 4 exhaust tips would be busy.

I think it may sound good. I know what you mean about the annoying exhaust notes. Right now I have stock exhaust manifolds (powder coated) and the back cats removed and the tips that are hollow and it sounds perfect.

It sounds so good that I don't want to put headers and exhaust on it because of the way it will sound. I thought if I did the exhaust I would include 2 big mufflers to get rid of that rattle sound.

I thought it may be due to the small engine size (5.0) but I have heard some wicked high end euro cars with 4.0 or 4.5 liter engines that sound great.

H-pipe with 18" Magnaflows is deep, not raspy and has no drone!!:bows:

IMHO this is the best system for our small displacement motors!!;)

I had a custom X-pipe from Grand and went back in less than a week to have it removed.......sounded like a Honda Fart Can on CRACK......Horrible!!:argue: :mad2:

25" long superturbos
Magnaflow Tru-X muffled X pipe.

No Brap/No Drone (and I have full SW headers)

Don't you guys have a set of 4" resonator delete tips laying around?

If you are going for sound and not performance, put the 4" tips on first.

I have them on mine and love the sound--- a little deeper tone, no cabin drone making the exhaust note more aggressive sounding.

After my Eaton swap, I kept all 4 cats, stock mufflers, etc..

Couldn't be happier with the sound.

Mike.

I have heard a lot of late model 4.6L motors with "exhaust". Most of them (to me) sound terrible. So I get what you are saying. The system I have sounds like one of the best I have heard: Kooks headers into Magnaflow hi flow catted Xpipe (2 cats only, I don't recall the part number, but got it from the members on this site), then through Magnaflow mufflers into stock over axle pipes into resonator-less tips (not 4"). I will try to post a sound clip or short video of when I ran it down the track for the first time. I think it sounds almost perfect. No drone AT ALL, NO Fart Can noises or raspy sounds, just sounds like there is something special under the hood! I have gotten tons of compliments on how it sounds.
With that being said, I would not want to run dual mufflers just from a performance point of view (unless you get some straight through design, maybe). I think there could be enough options to find something that would work for you! Good Luck!

I ordered a full SW headers & exhaust. I installed it and on start up it sounded great. Anything over 2100-2200 rpm was embarrassing sounded like some fart can from VatoZone. I then put the factory res tips and Dynomax mufflers in place of the SW stuff. Now it sounds great no rasp, no drone. Sounds mean when you put your foot in it.

If I had to do that over again, I would have just purchased the headers. The rest of the system does not fit well, tips look horrible, and is a waste in general. Especially since I have been told the rest of the factory stuff is good for over 500hp. I busted my wallet when I had to switch out stuff again. To top it off I was only able to sell the sw tips and mufflers for about $50 bucks.

If our bumpers were lower in the center then we could use quad tips like new GT500s where our stock tips are.

What does everyone think of the Aero AT2525 on stock headers, stock cats, and stock tips?

This is the type of info that is very useful if I switch over to headers.

I have the complete SW system on my '04 Silver Birch. When I had the 4.10 gears installed and the 60 mm Accufab TB, I punched it to see how she accelerated. The exhaust sounds deep and throaty all the way to the Rev Governor (approx 6200 RPM). I do have after market heads from Ford Motorsport on the car, so that may make a slight difference.

I was surprised how much more rumble you get when the rear cats are gone...:)

FYI, here is a video my son took of me running the Marauder down the 1/8th mile. It includes a lame burnout, too. Should be able to get a good idea of how it sounds thru 1st and second and a little 3rd.

Your car sounds pretty good.

I was just wondering what kind of sound 2 short mufflers would sound like more than what set-up y'all have. Most of the setups you've been recommending have YouTube clips and I'm looking for something deeper when accelerating. Might not be possible with the small displacement as someone mentioned earlier.

Maybe if I get the opportunity this Spring/Summer I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Ok heres a double dual exhaust. These are the next mufflers I'm getting.
Quiet until you remove the cutouts!

I've heard Mustangs with the 4.6 in my area that has a real deep bass sound when taking off...deeper than the fox platform 5 liters...I can never catch one pulling in somewhere so I can sak him what he has though...:(

Thanks! The muff's on mine are shorter than stock as I recall. Idle sound is good (not as rumbly as my 5.0 in my sig) but people know this ain't just any old panther! I probably have a video of it somewhere if you want me to try to post it (before I replaced the cats with the Magnaflow spun metallic core pieces, then got louder). Acceleration is loud. It may not seem loud in the video, but be running next to me or directly behind and it's perfect. I would not want it any louder. Inside the car, under acceleration, is pronounced, but no drone or echo or vibration. It has a great sound on the highway cruising too. Not too loud and no drone. Sometimes, though, its hard to decide whether to listen to the stereo or the exhaust!
