Didn't you say in the video: "exhaust leak"? Or did I imagine that and the smoke coming up from #1/2 cylinders? :D An exhaust leak can sound like a bad bearing VERY easily. Is it worse when the engine is cold and gets a bit quieter as the engine warms up? Rev it up, does it sound better or worse?

Sounds like a diesel engine. The engine compartment looks awfully wet. Beaded water on the battery, coolant reservoir, radiator shroud, and front cover. Hoses and tubes look wet too. Steam coming from the valve covers and block. How did this happen? Don't think I have ever seen my under hood area that wet even when running 300 miles in heavy rains. I am thinking that you have moisture in some of the connectors and maybe under the coil covers, MAF and air box. Low air flow or high moisture levels in that air ???

Sounds like maybe you lost a valve or two.

Raining for 3 days and 100% humidity and frost on motor

Try running the motor without the FEAD belt to see if the sound is internal or external. Use a mechanic's stethoscope to try to localise the sound.

Sounds like a timing guide or tensioner to me. How many miles?

Pull the serpentine belt off just to eliminate the accessories. Although I am afraid that is not a noise from an accessory. Good luck with your findings and post back.

sounds like valve train clatter as it is pretty rythmic with engine idle...Not sure about these cars so much, but I have seen before water pump impellers rotted off and clunk around, but they tend to overheat since the impeller isn't pushing the water thru.

What is the FEAD belt we've taken the serpentine belt off and it sounds louder without the alternator and other stuff running

Pull the front cover off, it really sounds like guide or tensioner, a little young for that, but that's my guess being as you were able to continue driving. It didn't look like the engine was misfiring and you said nothing of a check engine light.

is the noise from the top or bottom of the front motor,If the rattle is in the in the middle it could be the guide or tensioner as MustangMoser (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=18048) said but A bad valve would sound worse then that when you an still drive it.
I had the same noise & one lose chain,

Middle to top ,only left side of motor.I hope its only tesioner or guide that would be easiest and cheapest, how much of a pain in the azz is it to get the timing chain cover off?

Not too bad if you have mechanical knowledge. The hardeset part is getting the accessories off.

If it is a guide or tensioner,It is best to replace all chains/guides/tensioners when the car has 137,000 mile when it's all a part.
Mine had 110,000 kms when I replaced them but I also got the cams done at the same time & it was a lot of surgery & not cheap but worth it.
Ether way the motor will have come a part or a chain cold break under stress.

be sure to check the belt tensioner pulley first. these can make an awful racket!

Noise sounds more like tensioners then rods.
If you don't have a machanic's stethescope use a 3 foot piece of heater hose. Rod knock will be noticably louder when touching the oil pan. Guides and tensioners when touching the front cover. on the cover you can almost get right over the bad section.
Also, it the check engine light on? Valve system problems will almost always throw a light, but rod and tensioner issues will not.
Also, try unplugging each of the injectors on that side while engine is running and the noise will greatly reduce or go away if it is rod or valver related but will not change if tensioners. Unplugging the injectors will thow the light by way, so do that last or if you have a way to clear the light afterward.
A friends 97 Lincoln had a similar sound and CEL light on and a noticable miss. The car had thrown a ricker arm off after a full throttle acceleration. Car had 199K miles on it. Pulled the vavale cover and put all new rocker arms on it, ran great after that.
I think it may be more likely timing chain issues than valva issues. Good luck.
By the way, most dealers don't fix or really diagnose engines. If its noissy and has a lot of miles on it they will just tell you it needs a new engine. May not..

WIsh I knew. I have a rebuilt engine, poorly done, and taken back 2x. I may have to sell the car. I may have to replace or fix the rebuilt. Tired of the problems.
