View Full Version : Benefits Of A 4.10 Swap/Lidio Tune?

On my 1991 LX 5.0 I had the 2.73's swapped out with 3.27's; it felt like another 50 HP had been put under the hood.
The 15" tires were always hard to break loose, but after the new gears the LX felt a little like my old '70 Boss 302.
1) Will the above-referenced work enable the MM to chirp off the line?
2) How much of a HP gain, real or perceived, will this produce?
3) What is a ballpark price for parts and labor on these two items?
Any advices are appreciated.

The parts might be able to chirp the tires off the line, the issue is the car just doesn't have any balls off the line in NA form because of sbf that makes it's power in the mid to top rpm range and the mass weight of the car. Now chirping tires when the car shifts is another story once the tune has been installed.
The tune itself is good for a 20-25rwhp and 30-35 ft. lbs. tq., gears don't add any power, just transfer what is already there faster to the road, it does help get the rpms up in the powerband a lot faster.
Tune with tuner will set you back $380-430, no labor since it's plug-n-play DIY. The gears, that just depends on how much you get the gears/fluid for and if you know someone who does side work to throw the gears in for you.

You will not gain horsepower, you gain leverage factor over the heft of the car. You will be able to chirp or do a burn out off the line, with a good tune it will bark going from 1st to 2nd....shifting will be awesome compared to the garbage tune that it has in it from the factory...when opening up the rear end there are many different things that can affect final cost. If you are over 100,000 miles or close I would recommend a complete rebuild with all new bearings and seals along with a girdled cover.... total cost to have it done for parts and a tuner installed is going to be around $1000-$1500 more or less depending on what parts you get and what you need.
I did it a year ago, I WOULD NEVER GO BACK!

I can't help too much with the tune. But the gears, DO IT! It is awesome! :burnout: Yes, you should be able to "chirp" and then some off the line and also 1st to second shift. But, you NEED a tune once you put the gears in. There are a few vendors on here that have tunes that are for a Marauder. Here is a video of my car at the track recently. My mods are n my sig.

As far as cost for the rear, what Curless said. However, check with some local Mustang shops. Sometimes they have special deals on 8.8 swaps. I see an ad on Craigslist in Tampa for 8.8 swaps for $399 including Ring and Pinion!

Guys, thanks for you input here.
It sounds like these procedures from a cost-benefit analysis make sense on both counts.
And, yes, I will come with credit-card in hand!

Yes they are cost to fun ratio approved. While you are at it, should look into getting the J-mod done.

I bought the ring and pinion off a member here for $140. Paid $200 for labor and had the clutch pack/diff replaced as well for another $90. I bought an SCT tuner from another member on here...think I paid $200 and it came with Lidio tunes loaded on it. Woke the car up instantly...felt like I was driving a new car again. IMO, best money I have spent on my MM....a close second is buying Rex's (RIP) old shorties/exhaust setup after he went with a SW setup.
DO IT!!! :burnout:

Mine will leave 10ft long stripes if I stall up the converter a little bit. I'm in horrible air too. Uncorrected I'll bet my car only makes 230rwhp. It only runs a 15.20 up here.
4.10's FTW!!!

lowest cost/ happy driver ratio mods to start any nutricious MM build.
Car runs more efficiently = less fuel too.

But would the 4.10 hurts top speed?

The loss of top speed is way outweighed by the new found bottom end grunt! Besides, how fast do you expect to go and how often?

How often do you travel at top speed?
Got 4.10's and I've been north of 120..........and still had more to go.

Ive been 145 on stock 3.55s, but like everyone is saying, how often does that happen? Once, maybe twice for me.

I have a stock drive shaft, maybe yours needs balancing, or joints. Also, remember that it takes two balls to race:P

I've had a DOHC before - not a Marauder - so I'm totally on board for the 4.10s, but why the tune? Is it to correct the speedo?

Stock 3.55s.
The tune is to correct the speedo, but more importantly to add more power and change shift points.

Tune will correct speedo, but will also add 20-25 hp and improve the shift schedule. The factory shifting is designed for economy, getting into overdrive quickly. Marauder is a 4200 lb car..and need to get it into the best powerband quickly. DOHC are not low end torque monsters, so getting it up and out will only improve fun driveability

guess ill be getting some stuff looked at then
sorry for the attempted hijacking :P :P
first buy a tuner from Mo's and get both a 3.55 and 4.10 gear tune, then save up till you have enough for the gears AND install, then when you have them put in, just whip out your tuner and load the 4.10 tune and there you go

The 4.10s would help getting the engine into the power band and a JMod helps with shifting. Is the factory tune that bad? I'm just curious how a tune will add that much hp. Not trying to sound ignorant :)

Stock 3.55s.
The tune is to correct the speedo, but more importantly to add more power and change shift points.
It also removes the speed limiter.

The stock tune shifts into OD at 36 mph, my zack tune shifts into OD at 47mph under light acceleration. Helps keeping your car in the powerband. Also the timing is advanced throughout. Short story, yes the stock tune is pretty bad.

I went around the Atlanta Raceway and averaged 125 mph on the back stretches and did it for 20 laps and had no problem with the 4.10's or my drive shaft.

Enough said :) and if I'd get a tune to correct the speedo for gears, I may as well just have everything else. I still need to get my Marauder first :) (and talk my wife into it)
