I posted this in the other thread, but thought I'd repost.
My Exhaust now is as quiet or more quiet than factory, got SW longtubes, (2) 3" SW Cats, Muffled X pipe and now Borla Mufflers.
Had 25" long dynomax super turbo's on, but after about 4 years the weld seam started leaking on them.. Still Dynomax super turbos are a great inexpensive quiet turbo style muffler. I was worried about making it too loud/drone etc. There was an old thread in Exhaust forum where someone took the Borla's off because they were too quiet - lol. (Brian, Fordnut runs these on his BBS) So I took a leap of faith and bought them. (My MM makes enough noise from the intake side!)
Got a great deal on on ebay, usually they are around $175 each.. I got for $80 each (19" case 25" overall) with free shipping and come with a million mile warranty. Nice polished aircraft stainless.
Borla Pro XS are a straight through design, so I was skeptical about how much volume they'd remove, but they really work really, really well. No Rasp, no drone, sounds sexy, understated sleeper..
They are really impressive. I can whisper to the rear passenger at 80, and they hear easily. Would recommend Borla if you want some power without all the sound. Heres a few pics. Also got (4) Walker stainless Lapjoint band clamps - makes for a clean install.

No Fraaaaaap, or snap crackle pop on decel either. I guess it's a low "vroom" :P
The intake side is definately louder at WOT. I swear it pulls harder too, which it should as it's less restrictive.

You have any sound clips or a video?
Curious to hear them with the rest of your exhaust setup.

You guys with borlas and magnaflows, how do they compare? I love the magnaflow tone but just wish they were louder. Do borla some what sound like magnaflows but just louder?

It depends on the models. I believe the Borla Pro XS are some of the most quiet ones, with good flow. At least, this is why I chose them over other brands and models.

I went with the XL, they are longer and quieter than the XS. They're usually listed as a truck muffler. Won't fit a mustang but the MM has plenty of room.

XS does not mean extra small in this case, Borla does not offer the XL any longer. They offer Pro XS, Boomers, Specilaty, XR1 racing ones. I too have the Borla Pro XS on with Kooks, X -pipe, Trilogy, and they quieted down the 8 year old magnaflow's drone. They are a lot quieter in the cab , but still speak up when you hit the go pedal hard. No I' m doing a sound clip, it's 18 degrees outside, no battery in the car and it's covered up.

Summit still lists the Turbo XL, they're about 6" longer than the XS Pro. Either one really quietens down the beast, much less drone than Magnaflows. They might be a bit too quiet for some of the NA guys though.

I see they do offer turbo XL at Summit, but I don't see them on Borla site.

What magnaflows?
I went from flowmasters (drone) to the magnaflow 12586 and no drone

18 inch ones that were 8 years old.

I have 7 year old 18" Magnaflows that sound GREAT and there is no drone but I have an "H-Pipe"!!:bows:
Most folks think the "X-Pipe" is "MAGICAL" but I found it VERY RASPY and annoying!!:argue:

Mine has x pipe and it was not comfortable inside at highway speeds or over 55. I may have somone fab an h pipe some day but it's ok right now with the Borla

Hey Fordnut! How goes it?
My Borla mufflers are straight through and have a 19" case size and 25" overall length (~24.8") I think they are the biggest currently you can get.

Re:X pipe that was loud: Magnaflow makes a nice muffled X pipe.
Looks like this - quiet and more power than an H...

I had Magnaflows on my 2V, with a full exhaust system. It sounded amazingly sexy. Had way more comments on that car than I get on the Marauder and significantly better than the SW mufflers on my current ride. I'm curious about the actual sound of the Borla XS now too. My Marauder completely announces what I'm up to loudly, just not stealthy enough with anything over a light touch of the go pedal.

No "announcing" with my Borla Pro XS and stock elsewhere. In fact, I have a remote starter. Sometimes I walk to the car unsure of whether the car is running or not, because I can't hear it. It has a nice sound when you rev it though. This muffler is probably too quiet for most folks here unless you have other mods.
I'll be deleting the rear cats and will install Cobra cams so it won't be as stealth then.

I have 98 cobra cams installed at +4* and it didn't really make the car louder in terms of db level, at least not a noticeable amount. However, the cams moved the torque curve up in the rpm range so I noticed i have to give it more gas to get it moving which makes it seem louder. I bought the car with what looks to be 2.5" cats and magnaflow mufflers welded in. It really bugs me that they are 2.5" as it probably creates more turbulence in the exhaust and impedes flow more than it helps, but that combo is not "loud" like a mustang with no cats and mufflers, but its still pretty loud. i will be switching to the Borla XS mufflers soon.
I bought the 14" case Borla XS Muflers for the town car.
It will probably be loud, but unsuspecting victims will just hear an exhaust leak and think nothing of it. LMAO
I could not find the long case versions anywhere.

I've got it front to back as well and fully plan on altering it when time allows..
I'll be making a 3" H-pipe, adding V clamps so it can actually be taken apart, and new Muffs.

Not sure how i will mod my Stainless works exhaust , definitely want a more quiet muffler like Borla , or Magnaflow something with at least a 24" long case , and V band the entire system.

Anyone every try using the 03-04 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Stainless Works cat-back with the Marauder headers?
The 2v cat-back is 2.5 compared to the 4v which is 3 to the mufflers and 2.5 out-back.
I imagine I would do Magnaflow Mufflers, and if I wanted to quiet it down further adding Magnaflow Magnapack resonators on the tailpipes.

Notch or no notch? I don't know what that means.
RubberCtyRauder
02-15-2015, 09:19 AM
notched means it is has an "alignment tab or post" so that two mating exhaust components are in the correct position. It really only applies to factory exhaust and to some full systems. You want no notch

Excellent info! I'm in the quieter-is-better camp as well, especially when it can be done with good flow.
