View Full Version : Do I need a new computer or......
Microsoft announced that early April will be the end of Windows XP support and that hackers are waiting in line to tear up your bank accounts.
I have an older Dell Inspiron with XP. My question is can I upgrade the OS to windows 8 or do I have to buy a newer model computer?
Thanks,

Buy a newer model! You won't regret it! We're moving a lot of business accounts over to 7 or 8.

Get a tablet so you can take it with you when you travel. Home computers (think tower on the floor) are becoming a thing of the past.

The newer phones are like tablets... Esp. the one ones with decent size screens. I use my phone more than I do my laptops.

That old system does not have enough RAM to support todays OS.
I still use a computer (laptop) because of the ease of access while home and I find tablets are great for portability but awkward unless you have a quality case and an external keyboard. Then to print anything, becomes more of a hassle for me

running windows 8.1 Pro on my Laptop that is used as a media center.. ASUS Gamer Series... Like it now that 8.1 has a start menu. Going to get a SSD and move my desktop to Windows 8.1 shortly. Desktop is a 3.3ghz quad core with 8 gigs of ram... I need more RAM!
Just upgrade and don't look back. You will be much happier ;) Windows 7 needs at least 2+ gigs of ram itself to just run. We had to upgrade all our work laptops to run Windows 7 and INCA or Matlab.

Pat, go to this Microsoft website and download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. It will tell you if your present system can run Windows 7.

If it was old enough that it came with xp, don't even bother. I work on about 40 computers a week. Not worth it!
Thanks guys for your input, I ran that advisory program FastBlackMerc suggested and it said to shoot the tower and put it out of it's misery.
I found an inexpensive HP at the nearby AF Base, 299.00, no tax, 4GB Ram and 500 MB memory, windows 8, NIB. It will do for me since I don't play games. Has everything I need and nothing I don't.

Sounds like a good system.
BTW.... It's a 500GB hard drive.
