View Full Version : DR chip and problem shifting!!!!

I cannot figure this out!!! I plan on calling Dennis to ask him about this, but I also would appreciate someone's input here who has installed a chip in their Marauder, and then temporarily removed it for whatever reasons. I have no real complaints about the DR chip. The transmission has shifted great w/it.

I just removed the chip to send it back to Dennis to get re-burned simply for something that's a matter of preference. And I'm amazed at how the transmission shifts now that the chip is out. It's absolutely terrible. If I give the car very little gas, it bucks and hesitates during upshifts, and it also does that during WOT.

I don't understand why this is happening. I thought that when you remove the chip, the computer simply goes back to it's original stock programming. And before I chipped it, the Transmission shifted fine although the shifts were a bit softer. But the shifting is disasterous now. How can this be?

Could it have anything to do w/The Stallion Torque converter?

Actually, it has EVERYTHING to do with your 4.56 gears. The trans doesn't know when to shift or what speed it's actually operating at. The chip corrected all of this, and now that it's not in use... your trans is going bonkers.

But what about when I had installed the 4.10 gears BEFORE I ever purchased a chip? It was still shifting fine then. The shift points might have been off a bit, but it didn't buck, or hesistate during certain throttle posistions like it's doing now.

Do you think that's because the shift points weren't thrown off as much w/the 4.10's as they are w/the 4.56's??? Man, this thing is just acting really weird!!! it's like a whole different car than it ever was even out of the show room.

Just for the sake of asking, have you reset the ECC by disconnecting the battery for 15 - 30 minutes? Doesn't the computer learn your driving habit over a period of time and remember them? Thus, it remembers how you drove with the chip installed, which correct the speedometer too. Then when removed, the computer simply doesn't know what to do about shifting.
You've removed the chip, computer goes back to 3.55's, goes back to original settings, for performance, and just doesn't know who or where it's at. Just a thought and worth a try.

yeah, someone else just told me that too. So now that you've mentioned that too, I'm gonna try it. I don't know if it makes a difference weather you leave the battery disconnected for 15 minutes or not. But what do I have to lose? Right? besides, it will be an interesting experiment.

I hear all kinda different stories when it comes to this computer stuff. One guy told me to disconnect the battery, and touch the positive terminal to the post three times on and off before reconnecting it to reset the computer. Where does this stuff come from?..........

Hey Billy, I'm thinking gears too, mine acted really wierd with the chip out for the month Dennis had it back. I quit driving the car it was so undesirable.

Billy: I don't no if I would do the second part of the above. I do know that the computer can be reset via the battrery disconnect to clear out any diagnostic codes. I would think that in so doing, the rest of the parameters would also be reset to a known value.

To all interested.....DO NOT DISCONNECT THE POSITIVE TERMINAL FIRST!!!! :nono:

Always disconnect the negative terminal first and connect it last to prevent current "spikes" from getting to the computer!! You can wipe out your computer by screwing with the positive connection as described above!!! :fire:

Just to add, yes, the computer does remember how you drive. When I first drive the car by myself and floored it, it had been the first time it had been stomped on in 3 and a half years almost. I floor it from a stand it gains 3000 RPMs and shifts to second. Did this a few times.
