Since I've been on my computer this morning, the window I've had open to browse the internet has twice just closed itself without any kind of warning. I'll be reading something and 'poof' the window just disappears. I've never had this issue before. MM.net is the only website I've visited this morning. My PC is 8 years old (Dell inspiron 530) and my OS is Vista basic home edition. I've been mulling over the idea of getting a new PC tower (don't need a new monitor or other stuff) for a couple weeks now, and this issue has me thinking I need to get one today or tomorrow.

Is what's happening a product of a virus?

EDIT: it happened again right after I posted this...

Contact richardp, he should be able to tell you where to go to d/l a program called "malware bytes: anti-malware", for free. Essentially its a malware program that gets rid of all the bad malware on your cpu. Once installed you can do a scan of your cpu as often as you want....that way you can keep looking at all that kinky porno that you're used to :P

I have a program called "CCleaner" and a program called "Spybot" that I run occasionally...are these similar to what you are talking about?

The same thing has been happening to my Dell Inspiron 530 these past two days. At first I thought I inadvertently hit a key, but as you say, it happened right before my eyes. Prevailing wisdom says to get a new PC since this one is more than seven years old. Looking at Wal-Mart on line, my needs are simple and my budget small.

Yep, I think my computer is *****. It's doing all kinds of crazy stuff when I'm using the internet. However, since I use my phone to access the internet (have it plugged into the CPU), is it possible my phone has a virus? I'm running my Spybot program right now and did the same with my CCleaner program...the disappearing trick has happened twice more...

The website was recently moved to a new server and I believe also upgraded to a new version of the forum software. It's possible that if you are using an older browser it could be causing the crashing.

Malwarebytes is a good scan and clean program to try though, just to be safe.

I followed the instructions that popped up after the move/upgrade was completed. My Spybot scan turned up no threats; the disappearing act hasn't happened in the past 20 minutes, either. I did the ipconfig thing 4 or 5 times last night because I didn't know if it worked or not...maybe that's what caused the disappearing act? :dunno:

Keep it simple
try going to internet options and check that on the security tab that all settings are at default
then go to advanced and click on restore advanced settings and last if those 2 above don't work click on the reset button in the advanced settings

Good place to find info on bug removal: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

We use about ten separate programs to hunt down and kill bugs since no one progie does it all. This is a good tool from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline

Kaspersky Rescue Disk is also good for offline scanning: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk

I use Malwarebytes, Spybot, and CCleaner regularly. Also be sure your virus-protection software (Norton, McAfee, whatever you use) is kept up to date.

What browser are you using? I've given up on IE, using Firefox now.

Same here... never liked Internet "Exploder".

I have Spybot scheduled to run every Thursday at 3am, but sometimes it will run on a different day/time. When I ran it yesterday morning, the last time it was run was Jan 18th at 7:44am...don't know what's going on here.

I have IE; I have used Firefox (on campus), but honestly cannot tell the difference between the two.

Jim, did you get my PMs I sent you yesterday?

How recently have you tried Firefox? Make sure that you have the latest update.

I've given up on IE. Too bloated - Can't handle today's" Content load" IMHO.

I downloaded firefox on my PC last night before I went to bed. Tried it out this morning. First thing I did was logged into my Mastering Physics account to do homework, as accessing this site has been a royal PIA so far this semester using my home PC. It loads a little faster, but the dialog boxes to type in answers do not load properly, making it impossible to actually type in answers to homework questions...I don't have this problem using the computers on campus (using firefox or IE)....
