View Full Version : My Turbo Build Pics
Since I wasn't around when I wrecked the car, rebuilt it and fabbed the turbo kit, I figured Id share everything that went into it. Enjoy
Day of the wreck in Kentucky:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/2012-04-11_18-34-32_744.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/2012-04-11_18-34-32_744.jpg.html)
Got ran off the road and Dukes of Hazzarded the car. Lots of frame damage, wrinkled roof, wrinkled drivers quarter panel. Everyone said you cant fix that....yeah ok.
Scored all this on CL for $1200, and a bunch more not pictured:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/100_3390.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/100_3390.jpg.html)
This area was really bad:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3492-1.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3492-1.jpg.html)
On the frame rack:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3622.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3622.jpg.html)
It came down so hard that the firewall was wrinkled causing the front end not to fit. I had to shim the body off the frame about 1/2" with huge grade 8 washers.
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/2013-03-25_18-24-00_172_zps767ed5aa.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/2013-03-25_18-24-00_172_zps767ed5aa.jpg.html)
I started everything based off this flange:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/2012-12-01_14-46-29_792.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/2012-12-01_14-46-29_792.jpg.html)
Then built the crossover pipe:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3691.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3691.jpg.html)
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3692.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3692.jpg.html)

Continued.....
I took 1/4" off the AC compressor body so it would hug the engine better. That's a 3" pipe pictured:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn306/Marauder-Z/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3700.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/Marauder-Z/media/Blue%20MM%20Rebuild/100_3700.jpg.html)
Moving along;

Wastgate plumbing:

Downpipe:
I lowered the ABS module and moved it back. No re-making of brake lines necessary

Fits with ample clearance:

Mustang fan flipped upside down, and simple aluminum brackets. This fan barely cuts it...im upgrading this year:

Then I got aggressive and hurt a few pistons. I had to hurry up and get the shortblock fixed in 2 weeks to make it to MV11.

I never got a clean dyno since I had to upgrade the valve springs. Im going back in March for a 93 and E85 tune.
Here's a vid right after I put the springs in:

I have since installed a Circle D 4k Converter which is exactly what the car needed. Its a blast to drive.
Good stuff

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics Zack. These few pictures do not do justice to the amount of time and work that went into the project. I love the sound of the turbo in the video!

Now that's a killer 'home-brew' turbo kit!.......:bows:
Awesome work Zack!
Must be a fake speedometer in that video....it is sweeping WAY TOO FAST....
BTW: You've got some BIG hot side pipes really close to some other components...are you worried about unintentionally cooking stuff?
Also, is there anyway to run that big air filter/intake farther away from the hot radiator air?....maybe a 90 degree turndown?

With the heat wrap I have had no issues. Ive put 2k miles on the setup.
As for the air filter, Ive had no issues with that either.
IAT's at WOT are 20-40 over ambient. Pretty acceptable to me. I have a good Treadstone intercooler on it.
You can grip the wrapped hot side pipes for 5-10 seconds before you say oh ***** that's hot

You've got the hot side pipes thermal coated plus the heat wrapped....that's very effective.
I just dropped a new 2.5 Turbo* in my wife's Subaru along with a bigger turbo, bigger intercooler and larger crossover pipe, uppipe and downpipe.
I wrapped them in DEI's new Titanium heat wrap: http://www.designengineering.com/category/catalog/dei-cycle/motorcycle-exhaust-pipe-wrap-kits/titanium-exhaust-wrap-lr-technology
You are right, those wrapped pipes stay amazingly 'cool'....even after some....errrrr......spirited driving.
* #2 cylinder expired at 193,000 miles.....not too bad for a turbo engine.

What happened with the firewall that made you use those spacer washers?
You pulled the frame back down on the rack....but the body panels still didn't fit?
Did the new windshield fit properly?

Its crumpled in places you cant even see, causing the body to sit lower on the frame. The washers fixed it.

As you said....A "Dukes of Hazzard" event.
Luckily it's body-on-frame...not sure a unibody would have been salvageable.
Plus with a unibody, you would be bending and putting wrinkles everywhere with that turbo's massive torque.
