View Full Version : What do you love more than your Marauder?

I'm pretty new here, don't know anyone. Obviously, I joined because of a common interest (the Marauder). I've wanted one since I first saw them advertised on TV.

Sort of like I wanted a first gen 4runner ever since I saw one when I was 10 in 1985. Got one of those a few years ago, and it was all I hoped it would be too! It will be my son's dd in 3 years when he turns 16, and my daughter's when she is old enough. hopefully even make it last long enough for the younger pair, but we'll see.

Anyway, my biggest passion isn't automotive. I've always loved cars but even more than that I get excited about one of John Moses Browning's most famous designs: the 1911 pistol.

First off, I'm a normal person haha. I just have an interest in collecting and shooting these for recreational purposes. But my interest may be a little deeper than most. My gal says I'm obsessed, I prefer to think I'm an enthusiast.

Here's a brief overview of my other hobby, with many pics!

Two Springfields:

A British Colt from the Great War:

An old National Match I found:

One of my USGI pistols from WW2:

A first year Colt Delta Elite:

Another pistol from WW2, this one's a bit of a mutt:

http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/ae318/nolequiring/Pistols/044.jpg (http://s983.photobucket.com/user/nolequiring/media/Pistols/044.jpg.html)

A Colt from WW1, seen better days:

http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/ae318/nolequiring/Pistols/056.jpg (http://s983.photobucket.com/user/nolequiring/media/Pistols/056.jpg.html)

A pair of newer Colt's:

http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/ae318/nolequiring/Pistols/016-7.jpg (http://s983.photobucket.com/user/nolequiring/media/Pistols/016-7.jpg.html)

Another WW2 survivor:

http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/ae318/nolequiring/Pistols/049.jpg (http://s983.photobucket.com/user/nolequiring/media/Pistols/049.jpg.html)

One last pic, a Colt's Super .38 made in 1929. The crown jewel in my humble collection:

http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/ae318/nolequiring/Pistols/014.jpg (http://s983.photobucket.com/user/nolequiring/media/Pistols/014.jpg.html)

These are a few of the things that keep me from dumping more money into my car projects. Just thought I'd share and ask the question, what do you love more than your Marauder?

Not necessarily more, but I equally enjoy my watches.

Except the one I am selling because it didn't speak to me like my others.

Besides my wife, 3 kids, my faith and most of my family (got a couple of real knuckleheads).

Machines in general. Machines could be a M1 Abrahams, Harley, 'clean' looking cars/trucks ... it really does not matter. I appreciate the way they work, the subtle details that make it personal. For example the old B-17's that were individually named by the crews, and those personal touches.

Trains, planes and automobiles.
Have to say my top passions right now are: Cars, my Merc, and Garden tractors. I have always been a car guy but never had the money to really do what I want in this hobby.

Machines are cool, just like ‘em. Guess that is why I enjoy Garden Tractors. I had 6 in various states of repair before we move to CA. I left one at my Mom's for use there and bought one when i got here. Really could get along without it since I have spent all my efforts with it in repairing it, finding parts on the cheap and so on. Finding old GT's and draging them home is fun, kind of like the car hobby but on a small scale and much cheaper. And you can rip a stump out of the ground if you need to.

I have always liked model railroading but never had a layout, admitted to myself that I collect trains, HO scale. Enjoy building scale models, mostly warbirds.

Watches fascinate me and I have a small collection, the two valuable ones are family air-looms. I am having my Dad's Eternamatic cleaned and oiled now.

I stay away from some hobbies because of cost and time, like RC models.
Wife won't let me get a gun but that will end soon, plan on getting a 1911 army issue sidearm, then a shotgun and start hunting. and maybe something that will take down the wild boar running amok in our country.
If I am not careful I will turn into a hoarder.

Before I even clicked the thread I thought "My Guns", sure enough a picture of two beautiful 1911's.

Me too. I love my guns. I shoot competitively during the car off season. If push came to shove and I had to pick between them and the mustang's I have. I would likely sell the cars.

I've heard those pipes at full song up close and personal leaving Manassas BK at the 234 north-south split !! Deafening. :2thumbs: Of course, even at idle sitting next to me I had to read your lips because I wasn't hearing the words.

Ok, quite a few folks here have said "wife, kids, health." I never meant to imply that those aren't high on my list too, I have a wonderful little gal that has stuck with me through thick and thin for the last 14 years, and four great children as a result of that.

My wife fought it since 2004. Finally bought one in March of 2009. Flat out said tough. I'm getting it. :burnout:

I got a pre Christmas bonus from work and bought the car. Then I used the SC fund I had saved up (for the car) to pay off her delinquent credit card that I just found out about. She really couldn't say anything about me buying the car then.

Time line..

2003- no money for new.

2004-My wife was 100% all for getting a slightly used one.

2005- already started seeing the obsession and started to think "great, a $430 car payment for a car that sits in the garage that nobody is allowed to breathe on". Well duh.

2005- she was right...

2007- she started to come to terms.

2008- supercharged, started hatin again..
2010- pretty much retired from use, but not being sold. Yup, more hate.

2013- converted to 6sp, plus going absolutely ballistic on financial draw and pretty much a complete rebuild. (paid off now right?? :) ) I think you know her feelings by now...

2014- as much as she's been off again on again, she has accepted the fact that A. It's now family, and B. It will never ever be "done" and will change shape many more times and continue to evolve... She now gets it and accepts it, and even supports it 110%

In the end I still think it's easier than convincing her of letting me get a live in girlfriend....! Been working on that three times longer than the cars existence, even promising she would be waaaayy different than the short, big tipped, fast black one that sleeps in the garage!!!

I lost my Dad in July of 08 and have a few things that were his..I guess more sentimental and not really like the Marauder at all in terms of like or love.

I have some of his toy tin trucks from the early 30's, a working Lionel train set from the 30's, his prolly 40-45 year old Rolex watch and some other stuff. This is all I have out in view presently. I would imagine the Coca Cola one could be worth something since it has all 10 real glass bottles with it, none lost or broken.
