View Full Version : Raced a MACH I

I was tulling along last night, after dropping my daughter off at her Dad's house......minding my own business.....when this beautiful blue 04' MACH I, who was behind me, pulls up beside me. It was 2 young guys and a young lady.....
I told them hello by rompin' on the gas a little bit:D ......and they of course returned with the same ...... Finally, we get to this stretch of highway, with no cars and straight as an arrow.....I floored it and so did they.....we were neck in neck at first and then, I pushed a little harder and left em' behind!!!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :banana2: :banana2: :banana2:
I slowed to let them catch up and them left them again!! It was all in fun.....we both pulled into the next gas station....I let him know he had a really nice car and he said....."Is that thing stock????" I started to blow him away and say "Yes".....but, I can't lie. I let him know about all the mods and he was pretty impressed. He said, "Man you blew my doors off back there!" I grinned and said, "I had fun doin' it"
I told him about our web-site and to check us out sometime.

Nice, it's fun to burn those coupes.
The Mach I is definitely faster then our MM. A standard will do the 1/4 in 12.9 to 13.3. I know I have run agianest them at the track.

From a roll, maybe we have more of an advantage than we thought we had, especially when slightly modified?
Also, consider they were loaded down in the Mach I, so the weight differential was cancelled out. 4.10 gears multiply torque to the axles 4.10 times, whereas 3.55:1 gears multiply torque by 3.55 times. Doesn't the Mach I have 3.27:1 or something like that?
A new Marauder sport for the non-supercharged... racing from a roll! ;)

Wait a minute. A Mach I in the 12's? Not if it is factory stock. You must be thinking of the Cobra which is Supercharged. I believe they're doing about 12.7's. So you must have either seen a modified Mach I at the track, or a Cobra.

I thought the Mach Is were in the high 13s... or perhaps even mid 13s.
(~350 crank hp gets my fat pig WS6 to the mid 13s, so I assume 305 should get the lighter Mustang to the mid 13s or high 13s...)

I agree. Stock Mach 1's don't run that fast. They are in the upper 13's. Marauderchick, nice run. Good thing you had him from a roll.

Hmm, maybe I should double check on this. To my knowledge, the Mach I's have the same engine as the Marauder (302HP at the crank). But yes they're lighter, but seeing how the Marauder does an average of high 14's to low 15's in the stock configuration, I can't see Mach I's being any quicker than mid 14's or maybe even low 14's on a good day. No? They're still about 3500 LBS, right?
But then again, there are bazillion variables here that can factor in. Such as transmissions, there being three people in one car vs. one in the other car, etc., etc........anyway, nice kill Mchick.

All I can tell you is what I have seen on 4 different occasions with 3 different Mach I.
The ones I have raced againest run 12.9, when I ran a 14.27 w/ Stage I. Ran a 13.3 when I ran 14.56 w/ stage I.
Ran 13.3 when I ran 13.9 w/ Stage II.
All 3 were stock and standards. The 12.88 only removed the rear seat.
From my post;
"I have been watching the weather, 60* & 42%.
My runs were 15 minutes apart; 14.331 / 14.274 / 14.286 / 14.305.
I tried various slight variations on the stomp the throttle. Power braking just does not work on my car.
I caught rubber on the 1-2 and the 2-3. Thought I was hearing things on the 2-3 but some guys in the grand stand told me I was. THey also said the car really comes on strong after the 1/8 mile.
I ran 25 psi in the rear and 37 psi in the front. I also do not do a burn out.
This car loves the cool weather.
A friend ran a 12.88 in a stock Mach 1 w/ only 2,400 miles. His previous best was 13.33."
M & FF reports similar times for the Mach I, (May 2004 issue page 122, "...The Mach I is a solid performer out out of the box, capable of .. low 13s given good air and ample traction." April issue page 68 "... picked up 13.156...".). The mustang is about 800lbs liter, of course w/out 3 people in it!

okay, thanks for your input. I would say that if they were the type that are serious enough about racing to remove the rear seat, then they are also very likely to have performed some type of modifications to their cars also. Not that removing the back seat is neccessarily all that difficult, but it's just something that most guys that I've seen at the track aren't going to do in order to shave 50-75lbs off the weight of their vehicles unless they're a bit more serious about competition than most of the guys who run stock vehicles are.
So I'm simply saying that I'm skeptical of their claims that they were "stock". I'm not doubting YOUR word, just their's. A lot of people are so used to telling others that their car is "stock" since that is usually the first question they get hit w/after beating someone else in a race just as Mchick's initial response to that question was "yes". Atleast she then corrected herself by admitting to the guy that her car isn't stock. I admire that, and I give her credit for being honest about it, but most car enthusiasts, and racers don't have the integrity, nor the class and maturity to admit that they've modified their car after they've beaten someone in a race. As though it's such a big deal.
I remember being beaten in a race by a Mustang 5.0 while driving my Vette, and because that was the first and only time my Vette was ever beaten by any Mustang, I talked to the guy afterwards. I knew for certain that his car wasn't stock, so the first two things I said to him were: #1. "Hey, your car is really fast." and #2. "Okay, what did you do to it?"
And the guy didn't want to tell me. He wanted to try to get me to believe that the car was "stock". Then after I laughed at him, and then really pressed him by telling him to be honest about it, he then opens up the back hatch and shows me a Nitrous bottle. So much for being "stock". Yeah, apparently everybody is "stock".
But hey, I wasn't there, and I haven't driven a Mach I either, so who knows? But based on what you've said about those guys, and what they did, I'm just very skeptical as to their cars really being "stock".

As respects the Mach I standard the driver has a lot to due with it.
Just got back from Midnite Madness at the track and went against a black standard Mach I. Her time was 14.291 and mine was 14.217. Her reaction time was .362 and mine was .197.
I was very excited that I beat her!
She drove the car fairly well, but the car should have been running 13.5 to 13.7 in those conditions. Her boy friend who was also running a Camaro SS ran a 14.64 in her Mach I. He was obviously better at his Camaro SS that ran 13.25.
Another Mach I ran a 13.73.
We were all hooking up fairly well but there was dew on the track, so people were losing traction on the shifts. On several runs the MM started to go sideways on the 1-2. Looking at all my times I was loosing close to .2 due to no traction on the 1-2.
It's not uncommon for Mustang guys to remove the back seat. They sell a trim kit so you can leave it out and the car still looks finished.
I am a big fan of the Mach I. I think Ford did a great job on it as an all around perfomer at a super price. I beleive it has the Cobra brakes sans the lettering on the calipers.

It sounds like they don't take very good care of that track, but maybe I'm wrong about that. I've only raced in the day time, so maybe the night air is a big factor like you've implied. But as far as the guy running a much better ET in his Camoro SS than he did in the mach I, that's because the SS is considerably faster IF it was a 2000, or a 2001 since they had the LS-1 engines in them just like the Vettes do.Those are 345 HP engines, and Chevy is known for underrating that engine. In that case the better ET's from the Camaro was NOT because he drove it better than he did the mach I.
ofcourse that's assuming that both cars are stock. Also, keep in mind that reaction times have nothing to do w/the ET, since in bracket racing, the clock in each lane doesn't start until the car begins to move.

I looked at a "competition orange" Mach 1 on the dealer's lot Friday and it looked sweet! I really liked the functional shaker hood and the leather interior. The 5 speed was $29k + change. The Ford website rates the 4.6L 32V at 305hp @ 5800 PRM, 320 ft/lbs at 4200 RPM. Same engines as ours right? With incentives being offered on the Mach 1, it looks like a damn good deal.
Come on, we all know that the MM is released from the factory with one hand tied behind her back due to the EPA and misguided target demographics. Thank goodness that there's people like Dennis and Lidio with the know-how to cut the binders. The frightful thing will be lining up against a sleeper Mach 1 that finds these guys that know how to release the power in the 4.6L 32V.
I'm alright with this though. I rented a newer Mustang and they are not built to fit a 6'2" 280 lb'er comfortably. I feel just fine driving around my more practical ;), sightly modified, full-size performance sedan.

You should get it and keep your MM. I had a cobra convert rental in August that I drove hard (that's all I'm saying, lol) and fit just fine in it....6'1 250 but the car did smoke a lot.......I reported that it smelled like burt rubber all the time..........lol.
When Marauderchick first appeared here, I knew that we had created a monster! Great run, girl! And yes, if I had a choice of where to start a race in my MM, it would be somewhere between 60 and 70 MPH. From that speed, I feel safe challenging any NA Mustang. Even from the factory, this thing was awesone from 60-100mph.

Ok, my 2 cents. The Mach is a 13 sec. car fresh off the showroom. It will beat a Cobra outa the hole, because the cobra can't hook up with that independant suspension, but the cobra will win. My 01Gt has done a best 13.95 @ 99.88 mph. With minimal mods and ok traction in 60 degree weather. So if that Mach was running 14's, it had issues..

Mach I that are standard require a skilled driver.
I have seen 2 different Mach I that were stock run low 14's due to driver skill and I have seen a stock Mach I in great air run 12.88 and average air 13.33 w/ a skilled driver!
Bottom line is you beat them and that's waht counts.

This seems a little unlikely to me, especially if the Mach was a stick. He had to be a horrible driver with a stick for you to beat him. Now considering it's an 04, it could have been an automatic. Could you tell? Manuals run 13.1ish (12.9 with the right driver) and autos run 13.9ish. If it was an auto, I could see you pulling on him from a roll, but no way in a manual...
