The dashcam in my cruiser kicks on when I activate the emergency lights but it also records 60 seconds prior to me activating it which is kinda nice.

I bought a super cheap one on eBay which works well considering the price. It says it is "HD" and I've got to say it does look good. You do need an SD card to record on.

I can seem to copy a link from my iPad, but here is the item number 231138132033

Search eBay for "dash cam"

There are 5,325 to choose from.

I understand the iPhone is better since no sd card but do you want to spend $600or so like an iPhone is for a dash cam?. I have no knowledge in dash cams just relaying what I thought was decent for the money. What are your intentions with it would justify how much to spend

I just bought a gopro and so far the only thing I hate is the battery life. Simple fix though just get a cigarette lighter adapter and you're good

Hi

I use a Roadhawk (http://www.roadhawk.co.uk/) have it hardwired into my car, great bit of kit with built in GPS that will link to Google maps to plot your location and speed.

Yes, it appears that I have a small background in this field.

Op, do you have a price point or specific features your looking for?

I bought this one a week or so before I purchased the Marauder. Been working great for a year now and mounts nicely under the rear view mirror. Good quality video, I use a 32gb micro sd card. Installed it first thing for the drive back from Atlanta, and it hasn't moved since.

I have had really good luck with these.....

http://www.amazon.com/SMARTY-BX1500-120-HD-Recorder/dp/B005UG2SY0

It will record in 720p, 30fs with audio, it will do 1080, 30fs but the audio is choppy.

These..... when the sw is loaded to a online computer, upon playback, it will display google maps and google earth as well as time and speed to your corresponding location.

This is the reason for a dash cam. Oh, don't drive and cellphone at the same time!

Here in good ol' Joisey (where traffic laws and paying attention are optional and tailgating is mandatory), I'm thinking that I need to have a dash cam (maybe one for the rear window).

Any other suggestions/experience than what has been provided here?

Thanks.

Do any of these keep recording even after the SD card is full by writing over the data? That would be the hot ticket.

I have a Cobra dashcam that was $37 on eBay. It records and recycles in three-minute segments with a removable MicroSD card. It will automatically lock that file if it records an impact (that is adjustable for severity) and the mic can be turned on or off. I like the single red button that will capture and lock a segment on demand, such as witnessing a crash or crime. It can be powered with a junk power adaptor that sticks out the side or a more firm USB cable. I take it from my cars to my work truck and boy have I saved a library of complete idiocy. Here's a screen snap where I was cut off for approaching the on ramp slowly - because I was following another truck. Then I was promptly flipped off for almost hitting her after she stood on the brakes to match our speed. EDIT: Occasionally the SD card will get full and will require space to be made by deleting files. I am sure a larger capacity SD would be more convenient. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cobra-Electronics-CDR-840-Drive-HD-Dash-Cam-with-GPS/162520993273?epid=809537516&hash=item25d7018df9:g:gskAAOSw cgNZNYPp

Not sure if this brand is available stateside but I'm using an Aiptek X5 (http://www.aiptek.de/index.php/en/products/archive/carcamcorder/carcamcorder-x5) for years and it's always been very reliable, never gave me any problems.

I had some demos from a rep on the east coast.

The only others that I have ever seen for sale, were advertised online.
