Try turning the steering wheel a little to the left or right while turning key and see if it helps, happened to me once if your wheels are turned while shutting ignition off .

Try bumping your gear level forward to make sure the park/neutral safety switch is fully engaged. If it isn't you'll hear a slight click. Has happened to me a few times.

The MM doesn't have a steering wheel lock.

I had an ignition problem a couple years ago. Was a $21.00 part called the Steering Column Lock Actuator. Unfortunately, it cost $600.00 to get at it by removing the steering column. Not sure that yours is a related issue because I haven't seen any other ignition switch issues with the Marauder in over 10 years on the site.
Here was my experience; but I definitely heard a "snap" when I turned the key. I heard the chime too until I disconnected the battery >>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78911

I must have been thinking of my Mercury Mountaineer about the key issue, one problem I have with the Marauder ignition is I'll turn key and car won't crank until I bump gear shift up closer in park direction then will start right up,anybody else have this issue ?

It only does this once in a blue moon ,like 6 or so times in a span of a year.

Adjust the shift linkage.

After about 2 hours of wiggling the keys attempting to unlock the ignition I looked between the steering column cover and ignition cylinder lock and noticed a small orange plastic piece sticking out about 1cm from the ign. Cyl. Lock with a tiny metal piece just under neither I push down the metal piece and hear a snap and lo and behold ignition turned without any issues. 37721

I put the lock back together after carefully inspecting it, turned the key and car won't start. PATS light is blinking rapidly. Any ideas?

Did you try your other key? That's definitely a PATS issue.

After letting the car sit for an hour both keys starts the car without any further issues. I'm taking the car to ford in the morning to replace the ignition cylinder lock and check the PATS any issues. I'm fortunate this happened on my day off at home

Yep - had this happen last year. Fiddle with it for an hour and got it working then it locked up again and wouldn't turn again - ever!
Had to replace the cylinder - you can have a locksmith re-pin the new cylinder to the old keys so you don't have to reprogram the PATS for new keys.

I took it to ford yesterday morning. They couldn't find anything wrong with the PATS. But suggested I change the lock cylinder so far haven't hand any issues... I Like the idea of saving money
