Long time listener, first time poster... not.

how should I interpret the 2%'ers reference I hear alot about our Marauders?

Is it in reference to 2% of the Grand Marquis sales..
or is it the average buyer has an income level in the top 2% range..

always curious

Wow! I wish I had the income in the top 2% range. No, it's a pin that was made up for the members of the board who wished to purchase it. It kinda represents the 2% of the population that's always different, or something like that.
You know, sotra like the odd man out! Only, we're MM owners!

The 2% thing was used in early Marauder advertising. The car was supposed to be for those few of us (2% of the population) that "got it."

Rob is correct above...although, we ALL know there never was any REAL advertising (don't start!). Here is where the 2% came from below. We found Ron Rush's website back in the summer of '02 and posted the excert below which is still on his website today (I STILL say Rush L/M is one of the BEST "Marauder Dealers" in the country...you should check out the "Marauder Section" on their site) http://www.rushlincolnmercury.com/ .

I posted the following and it became known as the "2%'ers"

The Marauder Customer
The 2003 Marauder appeals to the customer who wants an aggressive, fast vehicle. They are pro-American and like to live on the edge. Marauder provides them with a great deal of driving pleasure while still meeting their concerns for safety and security, operating costs, easy ingress/egress and value for the money. This customer may have wanted a Mustang Bullitt or Cobra but really needs the passenger space. This page represents a close look at the demographics, needs, expectations and overall mind-set of the target Marauder customer.

Key Demographics
The Target Marauder customer tends to fit within these averages:

Gender - 80-85% male
Income -$60-80k
College educated - 60%
Married - 65%
Average age - 45

Target Customer
Marauder's target customer:

Is a performance vehicle enthusiast and has good technical sense
Is likely to do extensive research on most of his purchases
Will have a strong opinion on what he wants
Has to be active, have fun and be engaged in life
Needs to be true to himself, takes pride and gives 100% in whatever he does
Craves excitement and exhilaration
Has a need for authenticity, integrity and dependability from people, products and services

The target customer also responds primarily to these Passion Points:

Love for cars
Need to set themselves apart
Attention to detail based on knowledge
Need for quality and assurance
Spending time with family and friends
Cost and the Customer
The typical Marauder customer is cost-conscious and is often of the following mind-set:

Willing to pay a premium for a vehicle but only if it resonates closely with "who he is"
Higher priced products driven solely by image offer no appeal to him
Marauder will be part of the household fleet, so image and power are not his only concerns --- it must also have the functionality to accommodate his everyday needs
Cost of ownership is a consideration --- dependability and reliability are important to him --- he expects quality from the product he buys
Aftermarket kits will likely be purchased and will be considered part of the Marauder purchase

I'm probably going to Rush's Marauder meet on April 17th at his dealership... I missed the one last month. Hope to see Cruzer's recently modded high HP dyno'd car...

For the record, I am 100% male (I verified this) and have a 100% college education.

The rest of the profile seems to fit rather nicely.

What college? There are some 60% colleges.

We had some 60% students in the late 1960's that I recall - but most of that was caused by LSD and Flower Power.

The very early '02 media kit on the Marauder from L/M included remarks from internal L/M memos that cited the demographics TAF reminds us of now, but it also focused on the "aftermarket" upgrade spin that (at that time) L/M hoped would develop in their favor. L/Ms theory, based on their market research, imparted the concept that 2% of those who buy a Marauder, will spend more money to improve it, albeit perhaps not in these exact words.

I remember reading this as I researched the Marauder before my first purchase, so, that must have been prior to June, 2002. This concept stuck in my head, and I later read it again in Kenny Brown's notes about building the first supercharged Marauder. His notes remain on his web page today, at www.kennybrown.com Go to --custom vehicles--Marauder S--Builder's notes--Overview. Here's a clip of that text.

"Enter the 2003 Mercury Marauder, one of the best and most sophisticated base platforms to date for reshaping into a monster of performance wholly worthy of the name and reputation of Marauder. Mercury, and specifically the lads in the Marauder Group, has pulled off a minor miracle getting a low volume niche car like Marauder through the Ford system, particularly in the current economic climate.

The Marauder certainly fills a need in the market for a moderately priced full-sized sedan with looks, performance and style. However, there are those that are always looking for more -- more power, more performance, more cool factor.

Some clever marketer somewhere off in marketing land has dubbed this group of enthusiasts as the “two-percenters”. These unique two percent of the market are the premier driving enthusiasts who are passionate about their performance. This exclusive group wants more out of the cars they drive, and they have the resources to get it. And that my friend is where we step in.

Kenny Brown Special Vehicles are specifically and painstakingly created for those driving and performance enthusiasts that look at their cars as an extension of themselves and the joy they get out of driving as food for their soul."

After I became a member here, I came to make lifetime friends with MartyO, and he and I went on to design and create two lapel pins, the round black and sliver godshead pin stating "MercuryMarauder.Net--National Member" and the "fender badge" style pin that states "Marauder" with the checkered flag at the leading tip, above that "Mercury" and below that "Two Percenters."

The rationale for creating our lapel pins was twofold. To share in our uniqueness and common pride among the muscle car world. And, to raise money for improvements to our home, Logan's MM.Net web site.

Our round "seal" has gone on to be replicated in half a dozen member initiated projects, such as our 2" round window sticker available through our own MM.Net webstore, and custom embroidery on clothing and accessories now available at our newly announced "Channel D Logowear" from NO4GL. Our "fender badge" went on to become actual correct scale fender badges that sold out fast. ('04 availability of fender badges is expected soon).

For more 411 on clothing and accessories, click here http://home.comcast.net/~n4ogl

So, there you have it. The tag "Two Percenters" was created by an unknown L/M marketing research employee (probably a summer intern that got paid squat for this ingenious tag), and we have given this life from there.

Looking at our behavior here, I think we have earned the tag and it suits us well.

You missed one important part of the 60's - wide open street racing with some of the hottest cars imaginable. Ever drag race a cop car with a built 440 magum in a Plymonth sedan just so the cops could see if they should even try to catch you. Ever ride in a '68 Dart with a 440, a '66 427-6v Chevelle, '64 327-375 hp FI Corvette, '66 427 Fairlane, '64 Fairlane Shelby 289 hipo, '64 427-8v Fairlane, '65 Royal GTO 400-6v, Yenko 427 Camaros, '67 Shelby 427 Mustang (yes, a Shelby with a Shelby door tag and VIN), Ramber 360 S/C, etc. Cars that would literally suck the breath out of your lungs when floored with exhaust concussion that hampered your chest and g-forces that pinned you in the seat and then threw you forward between shifts. Memories, but what memories for the 2%s. I think I might even drive the MM tomorrow, no its suppose to rain.
