Do you know any other details? What caused it? Successive explosions or just one?

The hazmat guy inside if me wants to know for training.

They have not said yet. Probably just your garden variety natural gas leak taking out the neighborhood......

Seems that you would need quite a bit of natural gas to leak for an extended amount of time, yet not escape the house, to cause an explosion that big. Were there people in the house when the explosion occurred? This event seems a little fishy; regardless, sucks for the people that were impacted by this....

That looks a bit bigger than what a grill propane tank can do imo.

the report said no casualties so maybe they weren't home and the leak had time to fill the whole house and KABLUWY!!!!

I understand what you're saying, but doesn't natural gas have to be under a great amount of pressure to produce a decent-sized explosion? Wouldn't this explosion be on the order of what you would see at a natural gas plant? I dunno....I just can't comprehend an explosion of this magnitude occurring in someone's house...

Saw it on the news this past weekend. They suspect a gas leak. And yes they can cause that type damage to homes. It happens wayyyyyy too often here in Texas. Atmos Energy and old aging gas lines are being blamed here or in some cases faulty couplings. I hate I have to have it in my house and called them about 7-8 years ago trying to find out how I could change to all electric or new gas provider. No luck either way, Atmos got a monopoly in this area.

Perhaps if his grille was hooked directly to the delivery tank truck...

Propane is heavier than air and (theoretically) a #20 tank could have leaked into a basement and done that, but I'm guessing this was a natural gas explosion.

Geez, those are nice houses around it too. Lots of $$$ in damage. How's the housing insurance situation down there in the US?

Depends on the area. We're not in a hurricane, flood, earthquake, forest fire, mudslide or tornado alley area, so I pay roughly $1000 per year. House worth maybe $180,000. That house there I would guess is in a $600-800k neighborhood.

I was off a bit. Zillow says the house was worth $964,000 on average.

Here's a before pic. The place was huge. Lower left house.

Wow, stuff is cheap down that way. That house in a similar neighborhood in my neck of the woods would be in the 2.5 million range. In suburban DC, probably 4.5 million.

Hard to believe that nobody was killed!

We had a mansion go kablooey a few years back, probably an inside job but it was never proven. A little less damage, still a ton, but somehow no deaths. I live 6ish miles away, and it woke me up out of a sound sleep.

A smaller, much more modest home has been built on the lot.
