Wife says I'm obsessed. I say I have a healthy interest and a solid investment.

Show em off if you like the sexiest pistol ever to grace God's green earth.

I have a few but here's a couple pics to get going. Post up!

Two old Colt Government Models in .45:

i shot a remington 1911 at a gun range a couple times, one of the most comfortable and accurate guns i've ever handled.

I use my S&W Scandium frame 5" 1911PD often at 3 gun/IDPA matches. I love it. When it shoots groups like this... I can't deny its awesomeness.

I have a Colt Gold Cup National Match (.45 ACP) and a Smith Model 52 (.38 WC) They shoot fine, but I still prefer my revolvers. I am a 295 shooter, so I don't need more than one bullet. If I use the other five, then you know that you really pissed me off!

Ah 1911s. Glad to see there are others here. I just got a new one in the mail today, and the wife slapped down some jewelry ads and told me "I expect to get these for Mother's Day."

Today I got an unfired Presentation Grade Colt with Royal Blue finish and genuine ivory stocks.

I guess I better get her the jewelry.

I found a set of mother of pearl grips a few years ago, and decided I needed a nickel pistol to put them on. Bought a Rock Island just for that reason.

Then another pistol like it came up for sale at a price I couldn't say no to...

Crappy pics, but here's the PG I got today. Snapshots in my shop at night don't do it justice. The ivory is really beautiful in person, little bit of grain. I need better light and a better camera. It has Level A engraving, and they supposedly made 200ish of these in 2009/2010. Not a true "custom" pistol but probably as close as I'll ever get.

I have the Colt .38 that couldn't keep up to the Smith 52. Pre S70 National Match, its a bit beat up.

With a .22 conversion unit that just fits with the pistol:

I wanted to get a 1911 when I first purchased my handgun. However, many that I liked were priced outside of my price range so I settled for an XD45 4.5" instead....I regret it every day even though the XD45 is a nice enough handgun. At least I have these airsoft GBB ones to remind me of my failure.

A couple of British contract pistols, in .455 (wankers couldn't let go of their old caliber). The Smith has been rechambered for .45 Colt so its at least possible to buy cartridges at the local shop for it.

Well, you chose the right cal at least! I have a couple buddies who swear by the XD. I find it less comfortable than a G21, but its all about personal preference. Better to be shooting a plastic .45 than no .45 at all haha.

1911's are my numero uno passion. If I sold all my pistols I could probably buy the first concept Marauder and have money left over for a Slurpee. Not boasting, just where all my fun money has gone for years. Until last fall when I finally convinced the wife I needed this car. I've passed on some nice pistols lately because of the Merc.

Damn mistresses. It would be cheaper to have an actual girlfriend on the side.

That's true, I really would not settle for anything less than .45. It is a simple and fun gun but I feel like a Glock would have had more customization options.

And my everyday Springfield Mil Spec. Second pistol I ever bought, never get rid of it. Also my guinea pig when I get the dumb idea to try some new 'smithing.

2 lb Wilson trigger/hammer, flush/recrowned barrel, fitted bushing, extended/fitted thumb safety, home made rat tail grip safety, custom "finish", and it gets rode hard. All I do to maintain it is swap the recoil spring every so often.

Ok dag nabbit, I'll buy one! What would be an acceptable starter level 1911? I know there around 4.7 million different companies making 1911s but which ones should I avoid? Should I just stick with what I know (Remington, Springfield, Colt)?

Joe, love your collection of 1911's. The oldest I have was built in 1916 (according to what I can find) and has a serial # of just a couple over 150,000, government issue of course, and has the patina to go with being in at least a couple of wars. Still shoot it from time to time and is still dead accurate. Have some plastic as well, my carry is a Glock 17 with a lazer sight.

I'm certainly no expert, but in my experience a Springfield is a great pistol for the money. They have a good reputation for quality (you can always find someone who hates anything though) and supposedly their customer service is first rate. I wouldn't know about that first hand because I'm not in the States, but what I've heard is good.

Colt, well its a Colt. Everything else is a copy. If you are looking for something in a standard production type of price range, you can't beat it especially if you want the real deal.

Other companies make good quality 1911s, it basically comes down to a few things like: personal taste (is there something specific you like about one over another?)

Do you want a traditional styled pistol, or the latest in tactical coolness?

Forged vs cast is an argument that probably will never end, so that's up to the individual.

Para gets a fair share of negative reviews, I might steer clear of them. Their reputation went south with them when they relocated a few years ago.

Just my opinion though. Since you asked for them, I'd say buy a Springfield Mil Spec, shoot the hell out of it. They are good to go right out of the box. Don't buy the hype that a 1911 needs mods to work, its easy to fall into that because there is such a huge aftermarket for them, sort of like the SBC haha.

Not the absolute authority on 1911's but a good resource when trying to determine age and originality of the old pistols. Check out the ID page and you can find info on just about every variation of service .45 from WW1 thru WW2.

I would prefer a Colt but right now they are out of my price range. I have seen some really nice looking Springfields. I prefer my pistols to be traditional and leave the tacticool to my rifles, I think the most extreme thing I would want is a threaded barrel because why the heck not?

If I could legally own a suppressor here in Canada I'd probably have one pistol that would accept it. Because why the heck not?
