View Full Version : Have you ever bought an old RV?

My daughter is on a travelling softball team. I thought it would be fun to rent an RV for a couple of the trips - then found out it would be about $700 for three days...

So I jumped on Craigs and I see it's easy to find RVs for around $2k-$3k.

Sure, the tanks all leak or they're full of poop from the 70's. The fridge is shot and the stove is broken and the furnace will kill you in your sleep.

Or maybe there's a minter out there.

Has anyone gone down that road?

If you cant make your own repairs, I would strongly reconsider.

The biggest depreciation factor on them is age, not mileage. In some ways they are like cars so do your research on specific models, years and known problems--> rvforum.net

Expect to have to deal with car-like problems (exhaust leaks, slipping transmissions, etc. ) and house problems like leaking faucets, fridge not cold.....

If you have a pull vehicle, consider trailers too. Often much better values, more room, less maintenance, ....

I concur.

Or said another way, have you ever owned a boat and worked on it yourself?

NO, and NO I would not....they all have what we techs call "LOT ROT"....they rot from sitting, everything about them falls apart as soon as you try to use it again...rent one when you need it, and walk away!

I found a minnie winnie sitting under and oak tree in a pasture. had been there for 9-10 yrs. I bought it and got it running and stopping just enuff to get it to my house . to my surprise the on board gen. fired right up(LP). the tanks were good and the electrics all good. the biggest hassle was the fridge. took it out and put in a small 110v apt fridge and ran it off the Gen while traveling. sorry, to answer your ques? if you can do the work yeah.

What about a trailer?
There's some out there that can be pulled by just about anything.

5th wheel. One less thing to worry about - no drive train.

I was fortunate enough to find this one. It's a 2007 and had only been used a few times. Their divorce landed her the trailer and him the truck. She sold for the cash at a great price. Haven't had any issues with at all. I've now owned for 3 years.
