View Full Version : Regular vs premium?

I was curious if I will need to spend the extra for premium?
I don't need extra performance, so I'm fine with regular gas BUT if it will hurt the engine, then I will have to put in the better gas.
Also as a side note, regular gas was used until now (90k miles or so)

Stop using regular. You run the risk of detonation. Also, i just lost a little respect for you. :P

Ford recommended a minimal of 91 octane. Since 91 is not sold every where 93 must be used.

In addition to the chance of detonation, Gas mileage will suffer with regular fuel because the engine will pull timing.

its either spend extra for the gas or extra for an engine.

I ran regular for a little bit when I was realllllly broke and I could never hear any detonation nor did I experience any perceivable loss of performance. But I got a lot of s*** on here for doing it.

If you can't afford the premium, trade the car in and buy a P71.

Lol, i can imagine! You got to do what you got to do though. The guy i bought mine from said he would run 89 in it on his trips to FL from PA.

After my dyno tune, I didn't dare put any less than 93 in it. Some stations around here pass off 91 as premium.

87 octane is a no no, not to mention it runs out of the tank as fast as that E85 garbage!

I just got the car! I'm trying to see if it's worth an overhaul because the rear differential is bad or should I just junk it!
If I keep it, it will be the first time I own a MM!

I talked to my dad about how i use 91 in mine and he said I could run 89 as long as i keep to highway driving only and switch back to 91 as soon as i was back in town. I feel like this applied more to older vehicles. He would say how he would run his 67 continental on 87 on the highway without problem.

Hello and welcome.
We know you didn't mean "junk it". That was the autocorrect or something like it.
There are so many guys out there who would love to own a Marauder. Fixing the rear end shouldn't be too difficult nor expensive, but it will take some effort. If you are willing to invest the time and money, you'll have a car that you'll love for years.
If you don't have the time, then sell the car to one of the many who would love to own one and will restore it to its glorious days. Heck, I would probably give you more than what you paid and would ship it across the country and then fix it.
There are a bunch of great guys here that will help you out either way.

I used regular for like the first couple of months and saw no difference when I switched to premium...but I won't stop using premium...give the car what they call for and deserve...:D

agree so hard with this. To reduce one more of the already little numbers of these cars would be so wrong. :alone:

If premium costs, .30 cents more per gal for 91 or 93 and you drive 12,000 miles a year and average 18 mpg, thats like $3.85 a week extra. Eat one less Whopper or whatever everyweek and you'll never see a difference except that you will be drivng something not many others have the chance to.

You're right.
I am bringing it to the shop in a few hours.
I'll make a new thread with pics and issues
That the mechanic finds.
I would LOVE to fix it and keep it.
I will need a paint job and body work. I need to see if it's within my budget.
If the engine and trans are good I'm going for it!
I don't even know for sure if they put in the low grade stuff. I'm just ASS u ME ing that...
I hope not though... Either way I'll keep you all posted!

I put premium in everything i own. Its seems silly to risk detonation over a few hundred dollars over the course of a year in cars woth thousands/ tens of thousands. I put 93 in my 97 lesabre for highway trips and got much better gas mileage. Everyone got their own opinion on it, i got with my experiences.

If the motor doesn't call for premium, and you run it all the time, the carbon build up might be detrimental to the motor. 93 burns slower/ not as readily as 87, therefore if the motor isn't able to burn 93, the rest goes out the exhaust and coats things in carbon build up from unburned fuel....just my. 02

What about a mix of equal parts of 89 and 93 octane? haven't done it, but thought about it, while filling up.
Just asking.....

Ozark, i wouldn't waste the time. It would make 91 octane.

So many people don't understand that unless an engine is designed (or tuned) for it, using higher than needed octane is a waste of money.
93 burns slower/ not as readily as 87This is the crux of the issue...

The manual for my 96 SS stipulates 87 octane fuel (yes I have one of those too) putting high octane fuel in the tank of this car is detrimental.
The day I picked up the car from the dealer a mechanic came up to me and
made me aware of that.

Based on 15K miles per year and 16mpg = ~$1 extra per day for premium.
Stand on the street corner everyday and sell 5 pencils for a 20 cent profit per pencil and you can afford premium.

But what if they want a pen?.....i mean pencils are good, but you shouldn't use them for say writing out checks...
