Engines you ask, yeah we do those!

We have another MM here at the shop! Stevengerard dropped off his ride for us to tear down and inspect last week. As promised, engine is out, and the list is being created. We will document this one start to finish. So here we go!

So far we know that we need to rebuild the engine, obviously whats inside will tell the whole story. I can tell you this, LONG TUBES SUCK! LOL! Yes it has KOOKS long tubes on it and they add to the thrill of pulling an engine.

It's possible to pull the engine with the kooks headers on but yes it needs quite a bit of twisting and shifting to do it!

My money is on #8 dead due to lack of cooling mod :p

Just pulled mine with the Kooks attached. Pita! I left the starter loose in between the tubes and the block and that's how it's going in. :)

I'd love to see how you guys got the passenger side out from under the a/c box....did you pull the radiator or leave it in?

Leave the radiator in??? No thanks! :D I think the leveler was at a 30deg angle or more at one point though!

I have it just never installed it:o Not sure if there is a newer way to do it, but I bought my reverse cooling kit probably 8 years ago, just never got around to putting it on. Guess I should dig it out for Chris.

FYI this car has about 90k of boosted mileage. not a ton but not bad.

90k boosted is not to bad at all. Hopefully nothing catastrophic was / is wrong!

I install the PS kooks header, then remove/install the engine.
I attempted removing the engine with both attached but had no luck.

If there's a grand in the budget, send the snail to Vortech for a rebuild and upgrade. It made a TON of difference on mine.

You might have to upgrade the little Bosch valve afterwards though...

a Grand?!! two kids in college two more to go - there is a sawbuck in the whole budget, yeah I have already thought about that - if the engine gets rebuilt why not think about refurbishing the Vortec, which one did you move up to? What was the "ton of difference?"

Just realized that I have not updated this posting in forever! Well, the long and short is the timing chain guides broke and fell into the bottom....lesson learned would be if you hear a noise stop immediately. Complete rebuild is in order. We have the heads done, lost one complete side of the intake valves. Now we are waiting on the rotating assembly to show up. Going with forged internals on this one, being boosted for almost its whole life we just don't want to risk the rods after all of this time. I'll get some pics as we reassemble.

Pics must be 100kb or smaller to attach to a post. I checked the first two picks in the top post and they are 98 kb and 95 kb. Try resizing the pics if they're too large or host them in the Photo Gallery or an online photo album.
