Ill make this short and sweet. I have read a lot of info on the timing chains, guides, tensioners etc on these cars but am confused. My DBP has 46K miles, and it has the dreaded rattle on startup. Almost every time. Very disappointing but hey thats life. Before I throw the Eaton on it I have told myself I need to crack that front cover and see whats going on even though I dont feel I should HAVE too with the low miles. I would like part numbers, and tricks or tips for fast replacement, and I dont want any crap for wanting the best prices on quality parts. I am sure many of you here have addressed this in many different ways. I just need to know the most cost effective path. I appreciate the help in advance. And with any luck the Eaton swap should be done before Marauderville Chicago! Thanks fellas

IMHO.... With only 46k on it I'd just leave it alone.

My original marauder rattled every time.
When I took the engine apart, everything looked brand new

I'd change the plastic tensioners out for the metal ones, everything else should be fine at that mileage.

Here is my threads on the metal ones.

I read both of those, thank you.

Its VERY loud sometimes depending on how long the car sat without a key turned. It drives me up the wall. I would hate for there to be something broken in there and put the blower on and find out later. What will it take me time wise to pull the front cover? An hour?

You have to remove both cam covers, wiper cowl, ps pump, AC compressor.
New guides are 90ish from ford. Felpro gaskets for everything will be about 70
You can do it all in a day

Get louder exhaust and a good whistling centri. No more problems. :)

Are you sure the rattle you're hearing is actually timing component rattle, and not your A/C compressor? That's a fairly common rattle that many of us experience on startup. Goes away within 1-2 seconds...

Could be lash adjuster...
Just sayin

Any vids of noise?

It seems that 4.6's that sit for more than a few days have the rattle on start up. The oil just runs off the componets and it takes a few seconds to pump it up. Not a probelm on a car used every day.

When one of ours has sat longer than a week, I hold the gas pedal down on the floor and crank it. It will not start. Don't believe me, try it. Watch the oil gauge and in a few seconds it will register. The stock guage functions at 6# of pressure. Release the key, release the pedal and start normally. No start up rattle.

My car sits every winter and have never had a rattle at start up. Prolly not the oil draining to the bottom unless my car is special.

Wifes 183K mile car doesnt make a peep on startup. My A/C compressor does tick or rattle when engaged but havent really thought that it could cause a noise on startup. Will get a video

A good synthetic oil change, when I got my MM it was no clacking on startup. I got a few non synthetic oil changes. Then I started to notice the clacking on startup. I thought bout it. My first oil change drain oil was purplish(royal purple anyone). I was always told that synthetic oil wasn't good on older cars, caused leaks or whatever, so I did a royal purple Mhx 10w30 oil change, at first the clacking was quieter. Like u said only after car set for awhile it clacks . By the 2nd day no no clacks. Still cranks up with no clacks. Royal purple now on for me

Check or replace your two idler pulleys, tensioner and alternator overrunning clutch. Alternator bearings can also make noise. I was getting a lot of noise out of ALL of these components on mine. I think at 46K it seems a bit early, but if you're hearing excessive rattling at startup something is making that noise.

It's not that expensive and very easy. Give it a try . . .

Pull the belt off. Cold start it. If no noise, it's in the belt driven accesories listed above. If still the same noise, it's in the starter or internal to the motor.

That's good advice. The first thing I did when my new s/c setup was making noise, to eliminate internal engine parts as the cause, was to remove the belt to the s/c. Noise gone, so I knew my internals were ok.

It's not always miles that wear parts. Its idling. Ask any mechanic that services cop cars. Post a video of the noise.

Car has Mobile 1, have already pulled the belt. Did the WOT start a few times but got a P0190 and P1233 code so I won't be doing that anymore.

What oil filters do you use??

Its not the oil filter

I didn't say it was but if you'renot using a Motorcraft 820S most others drain back and cause the damn noise while refilling!!

Just trying to help you and we need to know everything before you tear it apart for NO REASON...sheesh!!:shake:

I simply stated its not the filter. I do use a Motorcraft filter, I appreciate your input.

I will not tear into it for no reason. The car has been doing this on and off since I got it with 30K miles regardless of type of oil used. Ill try and get a video of it. Seems like everytime I open the hood to take a video it starts up quietly of course.

I studied all the major oil filters and read their specs. They all have the anti drain back valve. It's not exclusive to the Motorcraft filter.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters out the smallest particles and can hold the most debris. It's the best you can get but costs 3 times the price of the Motorcraft. I used it a few times and decided it wasn't worth it and went back to OEM.

Mine has done it off and on for it's entire life (currently very high mileage) and it depends on how long it sits......overnight it usually does not rattle but 2 days or more it may??

I think this is one reason for the extreme start up "flare" to 1800+ RPM's....this gets oil circulating fast with very little load on the engine??

Listen to what Zack said about his in an earlier post...he's pretty much an "authority" on these cars and FORD Modular engines!!
