This thread got me thinking:

Does anyone know how Mercury decided on the designation of "Marauder" for their performance line?

I searched but didn't find.

The first time the name showed up in the Mercury line was 1958, as an engine, at the time it was one of the most powerful motors in any American car!

I searched but didn't find. Originally The Name Marauder was a name designated from the [performance]430 Cu In MEL [ mercury Edsel Lincoln ] Engine family, that was a performance option. ,With Tri power /The 'Super Marauder' 400 hp big block built in performance trim in 1958 was the first 400 hp engine built-" PERIOD"-.. [ it was before the 348/ 409 chevy] . Back then ,the Park lane and Montclair could get this engine package ,a few 430's found their way in some 1959 thunderbirds[ Holman and moody] also
the 430 block[primarily in Lincolns] were used up until 1968 from 66-68 it was bored to 462 -and phased out and replaced with the "385 block" AKA 429/460
