View Full Version : I ran into The Beatles last night

Last night I went out to network and it went better than I thought it would.

Believe it or not I ran into Paul McCartney and it was the longest 4 seconds of my life. I looked at him, he looked at me, I looked away and looked back. We both paused. I don't know why, maybe it was because nearly everyone there was all happy and free flowing and I was in all black and calm. Perhaps it was because of the Sun Records hoodie as suppose to another Beatles shirt everyone had on. Very cool moment. Sorry, no photo.

Now, Ringo. I was waiting to see someone and randomly saw Ringo walking and asked if we could have a photo. We also shared a few words. He could not stop looking at my hair.

"Are you Irish?" He asked.

"A quarter." I replied.

He had a good hand grip when I shook his hand, which is really good in my book.

"Thanks for the tunes." I said.

"I'll be sure to keep them coming." He said.

And that was it. I am not a Beatles fan at all, but I know of a rare opportunity when I see it. Let's be honest, 1965 and before was fun material, the drug era they can keep.

That's frickin awesome man! I 1st thing I noticed, was that you both had da same shoes. I am a Beatles fan! The closest I come to them, is going and seeing American English. They're a tribute band, and they put on, one heck of a show. Oh yeah, I'm frickin jealous of you now. You Suck!

Didn't realize that Ringo was so short.

Ringo is a little guy because I am short too. 5 foot 9, sometimes 5 10 depending on how good I feel.

I have on P.F. Flyer shoes, way better than Converse. Not sure on his shoes. He might have had P.F.s too.

+1, cool story ! I'd love to meet Ringo Starr, he always seemed unpretentious / more approachable than the other icons of that era. He was HILARIOUS in "The Magic Christian" with Peter Sellers :)

They still make PF Flyers ? I haven't seen them for sale since the early 70's. I figured they went the way of Tang and pimple balls ;)
At the time, PF Flyers were considered "bo-bo's" at about $4 /pr. Chucks were about $9 /pr and were the best you could get. Keds were somewhere in between IIRC.

From my experience, PFs last 4 times as long and only cost about 6 bucks more.

I haven't had KEDS sense I was a nickle.

Not for me.

The last half of the song Happiness Is A Warm Gun works though. I like simple 4 chord stuff, as you know. Especially the leather jacket era.

The Beatles are not a Rock band, they were a Pop band.

Most influential Rock band is Metallica. At least my POV for band that influenced the most amount of people to pick up a guitar. These days at least. Ask nearly any "Rock" band who influenced them and Metallica will always come up.

I would place Metallica in Metal or at the very least Hard Rock and yeah they are awesome too.

The Beatles may have originated as POP but by the time they were done I think they were hard to define as every album was so different from the previous one. I'd still categorized them as a rock band though.

No doubt the Beatles were a great band. However Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young were a super group.

4-Way Street is one of the best albums of all time!

The more people laud the Beatles up on that pedestal, the more you know they are drinking the kool-aid. The higher they go, the more it proves my point.
I don't dislike the Beatles I am just being realistic. Sure they were talented and influential but people act like they were superhuman even though virtually every song is in 3/4 time. And the lyrics are either bubble gum "love me do, she loves you yeah yeah yeah" or have a heavy drug influence and borderline don't make sense.
People in the 1960s decided that doing tons of drugs, having indiscriminate sex and putting flowers in their hair would change the world. Well that didn't turn out so great. It's one of those "the older I get, the better it was" type of things IMHO and without George Martin the Beatles were just another British band that tried to convince Americans that their version of our music was better than our version of our music.
Beatles, Stones, Cream, Yardbirds, etc, etc, etc were ALL completely influenced by our American music so if the Beatles were so influential, yet they were so heavily influenced by American music, wouldn't that mean they aren't as influential as some people think? Some Beatles fans act like music didn't exist until 4 dudes from Liverpool showed up.
Also- in the beginning, the Beatles did affect popular culture and set trends; Beatle haircuts, clothing, etc. but after a time, this wore off after they started to experiment with drugs and then the Beatles started to follow trends instead of setting them. I mean John Lennon fried his brain with LSD and other drugs, his late solo work shows signs of this.

At the end of the day this is all subjective, I'm not going to change minds, nor do I want to. I know there are people who think that the Beatles were sent to Earth from heaven to grace us mere mortals with their musical magic.
And then there are people such as myself that are a little more realistic and just think they were a good and talented band but nowhere near as good as a lot of people think they are.
