'30 Model A

not sure if I posted about this before, this is my other project. Got it from my father in law years ago, and its been sitting in my shop waiting for me to get off my duff and build it. My son and I finally broke out the tools and started on it last winter, picking away at it slowly.

When I first got it I was planning a cheap build, a down in the weeds rat rod, thought that was a pretty cool look. Now many years later, I'm not so sure. Too many people doing that these days, and too many of them spending BIG dollars just to make a car look ratty.

My plan now is to do as good a job as I can (never know if I'll have time to do another one!). Its going to be lowered but not scraping on the ground, and I'm trying to build it in the spirit of a traditional rod using as many period components as I can find.

Some stuff I'm going "new" but mostly for the sake of finishing it before they cart me off to a home.

At this point, the roof is mostly stitched back together. I've still got to weld the A pillars back together and then I want to weld a tube frame into the roof to give it some more strength.

The body still needs some rust repair and I need to replace some of the crossmembers and subrails in the floor structure, but I'm waiting to finish the chassis before I get into that. May need to do some tweaking for driveline and suspension so I want to build the floor around that.

I started my frame last week, decided to build my own rather than re-use the original or buy aftermarket.

It's being built with 3/16" wall 2x3" tubing for the main section from the firewall back, with 2x4" for the main rails forward of the firewall.

6" kick up in the rear, will build cross member to suit when its time to hang the Ford 9" I picked up from an early Bronco.

I'm using 2x3 for the rear section because I'm too tall to channel the car, but I want to maintain a low profile in the frame. Makes the body sit an extra inch lower, and with the 6" kick in the back I can definitely get the car to sit low.

The 4" front rail will step the frame back up allowing me to lower the front without doing anything too extreme. I'm ordering a Superbell drilled I beam axle, complete with spindles, hubs and brakes, everything needed to just bolt on the frame. Sometimes you just waste time trying to re-invent the wheel.

I can appreciate an original one, but mine was pretty far gone so it seemed like a good candidate for a rod.

I'm building an 8BA for it, hoping to use a 4 spd behind it. I picked up an old Fenton dual carb intake a couple weeks ago at a swap meet (its for a 59A but can be used on the later flathead too).

I have two blocks, an 8BA and a 59A. Depends which one I find more parts for but am planning to use the 8BA right now.

Also scored a dirty but brand new set of Firestone Deluxe Champions for the car, just need to source out some Ford bolt 16" rims now. 5 tires mounted on rims for 750 bucks.

Nope, not mine! It is a frame and engine that I am storing here for my partner. There is no body to it at all.

I expect him to turn the frame into some sort of rat rod.

I hear you. A kid came to look at some parts I had for sale yesterday, I wasn't sure if I should let him in the shop. Told me he's a "pinstriper" and then showed me his "custom" toolbox in his '13 Chevy half ton haha.

All good though, he gave me 100 bucks for a handful of old connecting rods, two sets of cast iron heads, and a 4 cylinder A bone rad. He said he cleans them up and stripes them for art. Hey, you can throw em in the river for all I care, I was going to put them in the garbage bin at work.

He had a waxed stache and leather Chucks. Hipster fo sho. I don't think he actually planned on buying anything when he phoned me, he said he was just trying to get to know the rod scene haha. Wanted to shoot the **** and drink a beer.

No problem with that, I like car guys and I like kicking tires in the shop. I got to drink a couple beers and came out 100 bucks ahead.

But a guy that says "rat" and "ol' skool"every second word gets old.

This was inside the Building "G" - 110 Years of Ford display at the 2014 Carlisle All Ford Nationals in June. There were 110 cars both inside and outside the building representing the entire history of Ford Motor Company including three Brewsters. All of the outside cars were under tents. Building G is an old dealership style building with glass front showroom and a service department. The Model "A" and Cosworth were in the service part.

"The Escort Cosworth was a rare car, with 7,145 vehicles produced from the start of production on 19 February 1992 until the last car rolled out of the factory on 12 January 1996. A tiny number were unofficially imported to the United States, where it was considered one of the greatest performance Fords of all time. "

One of our members "WhatsUpDOHC" was selected to represent this display with his JPB 2003 Mercury Marauder and was featured in the event directory this year.
