Hi guys, So the wife's 2009 Ford Flex has a cooling fan issue. It has dual cooling fans and with the AC on, the the passenger side fan run wide open but the driver side fan doesn't run. With the AC off, neither fan runs even though I let it idle for a long time to try and get it hot enough to allow the fan(s) to turn on. I read on the Ford Flex Forum that the driver side fan burns out which causes the passenger side fan to go into a fail safe mode and run wide open. Before I go out and buy a new fan, I wanted to check to see if anyone has seen this in the past on a Flex or similar Ford vehicle. From what I read, you have to buy the entire dual fan assembly. Thanks, Curt
Hook 12 volts to it and see what happens

Good idea. I removed the connectors to the fans and put some di-electric grease on the contacts hoping it was just a bad connection. No luck.

There may be no problem. The fan that comes on with a/c on is to cool your condenser. The other fan won't come on till about 212 to 220. With the car idling it may never get that hot. You have to have a scanner to see what the engine temp actually is.
The best way to figure it out is to use a scan tool to look at the temps and if the computer is commanding that fan to come on.
The other option is to hook power to the fan as suggest and see if it works or not and/or use a test light to see if there is power getting to the fan.

Ask a knowledgeable dealer Service Manager how they work!!;)
If he doesn't know he can surely find out if they come on at preset "temp steps"!!

You are correct, it my not run until the engine gets really hot, but the strange issue is the passenger side fan that comes on immediately after the AC button is pushed and that it runs wide open until I turn the key off. It just started doing this on Monday night after we've owned it for 4 years now. I did check for a blown fuse and swapped a known working fuse just to be sure. I'll check the driver side fan tonight to see if it works by putting power to it.
Fans are supposed to run full tilt boogie when the AC is on.

the passenger side fan that comes on immediately after the AC button is pushed and that it runs wide open until I turn the key off. The cooling fan in my DD comes on immediately, too, and stays on for approx 1 minute after the A/C is shut off. That part is normal.

Is it possible that something in the AC system tells the fan to speed up? It doesn't do this all of the time. Wondering if the pressure gets too high and the systems thinks it needs to draw more air across the condenser? Could the system be low on refrigerant?

If it was low on refrigerant then how could the pressures be too high?
That makes no sense. I think you are over thinking this.
